The Treatise on Ethics Called "The Wisdom Tree." Nāgārjuna. The Treatise on Ethics Called "The Wisdom Tree." Nāgārjuna. In Sanskrit: Nītīśāstra prajñā daṇḍa nāma. In Tibetan: The Treatise on Ethics Called "The Wisdom Tree." Homage to the Three Jewels! The unruly should be tamed, the virtuous should be honored, wealth should be filled with righteous conduct, and one's own country should be protected. One's own secrets and the secrets of others should be guarded like cherishing one's own child. A person who is equal in all places should be cherished with great affection. A bad wife, a bad friend, a bad king, a bad relative, a bad neighbor, and a bad country should all be abandoned from afar. Abandon friends who are greedy for wealth, abandon wives who are excessively adulterous, abandon foolish people who are difficult to respect, and abandon such doctors. Even if one possesses the wisdom to distinguish right from wrong, one should accomplish things through consultation. Not only should one pursue things that can be accomplished, but even if they are not accomplished, they should be done beautifully. Whoever is stable, gentle, and speaks little should be treated with great caution, just as the rays of the sun that emerge from the gaps in the clouds become extremely hot. Stable people, even if they experience suffering, will not grieve in their hearts. Does not the moon, after entering the mouth of Rāhu, appear again? Like a garland in a garden, pick the blooming flowers, but do not cut them from the root like coal miners. Rewards, the king's favor, the wages of prostitutes, words of praise, the rent of boats, and the share of dwellings should all be taken immediately, for these six will not be obtained for long. Misunderstanding mantras is poison, neglecting illness is poison, old people clinging to young people is poison, and poor people sleeping during the day is poison. Holy people do not easily make promises, but if they are forced to make a promise, it is like drawing a picture on a stone, and they will not change it even if they die. At times, yield to the enemy, and at times, fight with friends. By knowing the measure of what should and should not be done, the wise should pass the time. Destruction comes from the fault of the mouth, as is the case with parrots, mountain partridges, and partridges. Water birds that do not speak are not captured by people. Not speaking accomplishes everything. Subdue enemies by arranging weapons, clothes

Na (the nature) subdues a small wife. Fasting subdues all diseases. Habit subdues ignorance. One should hide one's own actions. If the sprout does not call out from within the mud, Who will find the root of the lotus? Even if it becomes manifest, One should not speak of impossible things. How can a peacock dwelling in a painting Eat jewels? Whoever desires to harm someone's mind, Should always speak sweet words to them. Like a hunter singing a pleasant song When seeing a deer being killed. With whatever thought One truly tames people's minds, One should become its slave, Like various jewels. Better to live by the fists of others, Better to wear tree bark in the forest, Better for people to die, Than to be humiliated every day. Not humiliating is the root of a person, What is the use of wealth gained through humiliation? What is the use of wealth and life That are completely destroyed by arrogance and pride? Undertaking tasks that are beyond one's ability, Being hostile to the community, and opposing the powerful, Trusting women, These four lords of death stand at the door. Do not see a bad king, Do not see a deceitful friend, Do not see a greedy wife, Do not see a wicked person. Having a place to go everywhere, Why destroy oneself by being attached to one's homeland? A wicked person says, "This is my well," Yet drinks salty water. For a person of high intellect, There are two kinds of happiness here: Either abandoning all commotion, Or possessing extremely vast wealth. When fortune turns its back, And effort becomes meaningless, Rather than a holy person becoming poor, There is no happiness other than in the forest. There are two ways of life for a holy person: Like the heads of flowers, Either being universally respected by the world, Or dwelling in the forest itself. The essence of life, Which is destroyed in an instant by oneself, is this: Do not associate with bad friends, the ignorant, or the violent, But live together in ease. Accumulating is like hail increasing, Using is like eye medicine decreasing, Reducing the arrangements in time, That alone is the wise one. A good friend and honey, And the waxing moon, The wealth of a king and the wealth of a beggar, A little, a little.
