Poetry Mirror, by Dandin. Poetry Mirror. By Dandin. In Sanskrit: Kāvyādarśa. In Tibetan: Poetry Mirror. Homage to the noble youthful Mañjuśrī! In the lotus garden of the four-faced one's face, The daughters of the white geese are all white. May Sarasvatī, May you long abide in my mind. Compiling the previous treatises, And closely showing the combinations, As much as I am able, I will define the characteristics of poetry. Here, even all the supreme ones, Are guided by the footsteps of the supreme ones. By the grace of the words themselves, They enter into the ways of the world. If the appearance of sound and meaning, Is not clear in the cycle of existence, Then this entire triple world, Will become a dark abyss. The form of fame of the former kings, Obtained the mirror of the nature of speech. Even though they are not near, Look, they themselves have not diminished. The speech that is well-composed by the wise, Is said to be the essence of speech. If it is wrongly composed, then again, The composer is said to be like a bull. Therefore, faults in poetry, Even if small, what does it matter? One should not be indifferent, even if the body is beautiful, One fault will lead to misfortune. Since ordinary people do not know the treatises, How can they distinguish between virtues and faults? When distinguishing the differences in form, What can a blind person do? Therefore, the wise, in order for beings, To understand the distinctions, Must combine the clear, path-possessing words, With the ritual of action. Through these, the poetry's, Body and ornaments will also be fully shown. The body, for the time being, is what is desired, The distinction of meaning, the string of words. This also exists in verse, prose, and, The three forms of mixture. The four-line verse is also, Divided into two types: vṛtta and jāti. All its elaborations, Must be clearly stated in the treatise on prosody. Know that the ocean of poetry, Is the ship for those who want to cross the depths. Liberation, lineage, and treasure, And what is called collection, Such verses are bound by chapters, One should not speak of the nature of parts. What is bound by chapters is great poetry. Its characteristics will be described. Wishing auspiciousness, paying homage, Things, Must be clearly shown, is also its door. Or it may be derived from a story that happened before, Or something else.

Relying on goodness, the four assemblies become masters of the fruit, the wise and pleasing guide, cities, oceans, mountains, and seasons, praises of the rising sun and moon, garden water play, drinking and joyful feasts, gatherings of mothers and weddings, the birth and growth of youth, consultations and messengers going back and forth, war and the flourishing of guidance, all are adorned and not abbreviated, filled with emotions and changes, the chapters are not too extensive, suitable for listening and the rhythms are well combined. The ends of all chapters, with their distinct characteristics, beautify the world, and those adorned with sacred poetry will endure until the end of the kalpa. If some parts are slightly deficient, but if the composition is perfect, then the wise are pleased, so this is not a fault of the poetry. Initially, with the merits of the guide, after proper arrangement, this can harm the enemy, this path is naturally beautiful. With lineage, diligence, learning, etc., after praising the enemy, in order to overcome them, the guide, speaking of excellence, also makes me happy. Sentences without rhythm, prose, speech, language, and talk, thus are the two excellent divisions of it. Among them, the guide himself, the words that should be spoken are words, the faults of others, guides or others, proclaiming their own merits, are not there for praising the true meaning. However, no definite understanding is seen, because it is also said by others, so why is there a reason to distinguish between what others say or what one says oneself? If the door and other doors, and the words that possess reliance on the mind, are signs of difference, then in the incidental words, like the noble ones, the door and other doors are not applicable. The difference between *lamba* etc. or *ashvasa* is seen, but what is the use of that? Therefore, speech and language, two names denote one category, and the remaining categories of speech will also be included in this. Abducting daughters and wars, deception and prosperity, etc., are the same when bound by chapters, these are not the qualities that distinguish them. The poet's thought is a sign, and it is not a fault elsewhere either. What is impossible for the wise as a gateway to accomplishing what is desired?
