An Explanation of the Gateway of Thorough Application An Explanation of the Gateway of Thorough Application In Sanskrit: Prayoga Mukha Vrtti. In Tibetan: An Explanation of the Gateway of Thorough Application. Homage to the Protector of the World! Just as there are so many thorough applications of grammar, one who wishes to understand expression should first understand the agent of grammar. Here, what is called "agent" is of six kinds: agent, object, action, perfect giving, source, and location. Furthermore, if these are divided, they become twenty-three. What are they? The agent is of five kinds, the object is of seven kinds, the action is of two kinds, the perfect giving is of three kinds, the source is of two kinds, and the location is of four kinds. What are the five kinds of agent? They are: the independent agent, the causal agent, the agent of action, the unexpressed agent, and the expressed agent. Among these, the independent agent is like this: the agent for merit is faith, the agent for love is a virtuous mind, the agent for intelligence is wisdom, the agent for glory is diligence, and the agent for obtaining qualities is diligence; these are called independent agents. The causal agent is like this: the acquisition of happiness is service, and so on. Relying on those who are relied upon, the benefit to the body is the service of reliance, and the encouragement of that is the causal agent. The agent of action is like this: if one sees the fault of killing beings, one's own complete suffering is virtuous wisdom, and one's own cutting off of attachment to ordinary beings, and so on. It is called similar to the agent of action of action, because it shows that it will become a collection of actions, and in reality, actions always become the realm of the sound of words with my words. The unexpressed agent is like this: virtuous ones do things for others. The expressed agent is like this: doing things for others is virtuous. What are the seven kinds of object? They are: the object that one desires, the object that one does not desire, the object that one neither desires nor does not desire, the unsaid object, the object of action, and the

Actions of speech and actions of non-speech, etc. The action of self-desire is, like even with the difficulty of understanding the Buddha's teachings, one liberates the mind with faith, this is called the action of self-desire. The action of self-undesire is, like a woman eating poison in anger, a man unknowingly stepping on a thorny path, or unknowingly holding onto a ghost, etc., like killing oneself out of desire, this is called the action of self-undesire. The action that is neither self-desire nor self-undesire is, like a child unknowingly drinking milk porridge mixed with dust, this is called the action that is neither self-desire nor self-undesire. The action of non-speech is, like milking a cow is a herdsman, burning offerings in a fire sacrifice is Deva-datta, driving cattle is a herdsman, requesting scriptures from a Khenpo is a Brahmin boy, begging for gold from a rich man is a Brahmin, picking fruits from trees is a child, teaching Dharma to disciples is a teacher, instructing a son in scriptures is like a Khenpo, this is called the action of non-speech. The action of doing is, like making a disciple come near, like being called a teacher. The meaning of words like going, learning, and abiding separately, from the cause of actions etc., is called the name of action. The action of speech is, like Deva-datta's action is a grass mat. The action of non-speech is, like working on a grass mat, being called Deva-datta. What are the two types of action? External action and internal action. What is external action? That which arises from outside the limbs of the body, like a farmer harvesting a field with a hoe, Deva-datta cutting down trees with an axe. Internal action is that which abides on the limbs of the body, for example, Deva-datta going to the city of Patala in thought, the eye grasping form, etc., action means to accomplish with great effort. Third, the actor and the third of the action. What are the three kinds of true giving? Giving to beggars, followers, and those who do not beg. To beggars, like to Brahmins
