The Condensed Verses on Reality By Śāntarakṣita The Condensed Verses on Reality Śāntarakṣita In Sanskrit: Tattvasaṁgrahakārikā. In Tibetan: de kho na nyid bsdus pa'i tshig le'ur byas pa (The Condensed Verses on Reality). Homage to the noble Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta! Both nature and Īśvara, and the self and other agents devoid of movement, actions and their results, those related, the bases of arrangement and so forth, qualities, substances, increase, actions, kinds, combinations, and other distinctions, emptiness and imputation, those with characteristics, those that are the objects of sound and knowledge, those endowed with clear characteristics, are determined by the two kinds of valid cognition. Even extremely subtle parts are not mixed with the nature of other entities, immutable, without beginning or end, like reflections and so forth, devoid of all assemblies of elaboration, not realized by others, not dependent on obtaining autonomy, wishing to accomplish benefit and happiness for beings, not weary in countless eons, having become the nature of great compassion, the one who spoke of dependent origination, He is the best of speakers. Having paid homage to that omniscient one, I will condense those realities. From the single nature of the lord, endowed with all powers, the distinctions of results greatly increase; that is truly the nature of reality. If in the nature of the cause, the power of the result is meaningless, then it cannot perform an action, because its essence is empty, like a sky lotus. If it is the same as non-existence, then why is there a difference in rice seeds and so forth? If you say that the difference is definite, then the proximate cause and the agent are not other. All phenomena that are subject to arising also arise in all things; in all of these, that is its nature, the difference of no difference. Therefore, the power of this is definite; it is not right to say that it is not so. Because the causes of power, etc., produce the result that is fit for power. Whatever has no difference to be made, is unreal and unchanging. If it changes, its own nature is destroyed. How can those things do that? Therefore, the result itself is not possible. By doing what does it become a cause? Therefore, seeds and so forth do not become the reality of the cause. This clarity is the substance of happiness and so forth. It appears clearly in the middle of the path of beings. Extreme suffering, equanimity, and so forth, these results.

It is because of focusing on that. Therefore, it arises from the one who possesses it. It is because seeing that kind follows. Like the distinctions of vases, it is the chief. That also is, says the Vaisheshika school. Here, the virtuous ones explain that there are similar criticisms even for what exists. What is your answer to that? The virtuous ones' answer is also the same as that. If, like yogurt and milk, the self has everything, like causes, and the self is the same, what do those that exist produce? The result is not produced by the cause. Because it exists, like cause and intelligence. Therefore, manifest desire is not the cause, because there is nothing to be accomplished, like the supreme self. If, like clarity, it has characteristics, in some particular cases, if this is done by causes, it is not a change in name. If it existed before, then there is no answer at all. But if it does not exist, how can it arise from those that do not exist? Therefore, because there is nothing to be accomplished, the immediate cause is not fully grasped. There is no birth from certainty either. There is no power and no action. Because the self is complete in everything, there is no result at all. Therefore, the term 'cause' is not reasonable. All that enters into proof is the opposite of reversal, and the one who generates certainty is like that. This is not reasonable. Doubt and reversal are always present and cannot be reversed. There is no birth of certainty either. Therefore, everything is meaningless. Or, if uncertainty arises from proof, is it not a true birth? Therefore, are all these not deceptive? If from those that are unclear, the basis of clarity, what is that clarity? The nature of distinction is not born, because it is inseparable and unrelated. That object is not reasonable either, and the obscuration of the object is not exhausted. Because it is constant and the object is, the second is also impossible. Possessing three qualities, inseparable, is not the creator of all. Whatever is not like that is the same, not all creators are all, because of dependence or non-establishment. You have no certainty of ability, and if there is certainty of that, is it not a dependent reason? If those are not born, then such a sound is completely extinguished, all distinctions are empty.
