Titled "The Reasoning for Entering Childhood" Triumph over enemies. Titled "The Reasoning for Entering Childhood" Triumph over enemies. In Sanskrit: Bāla avatāra tarka nāma. In Tibetan: Titled "The Reasoning for Entering Childhood." Homage to youthful Manjushri! The rays of your eloquent speech dispel the darkness of ignorance, shining brightly. In the three realms, you are the sole lamp. May the Bhagavan be eternally victorious! In order for children to easily enter the ocean of reasoning, I will, with my affection, strive to distinguish the methods. The causes of benefit and detriment, of gaining and abandoning, these subtle points should be gradually determined. Pramana is knowledge that does not deceive, even if not previously grasped, it can be grasped. Deception is being false due to weakness, unable to obtain what is seen. Non-deception is being true and not false, able to obtain what is seen. That which possesses this ability is the non-deceiver. Ungrasped is knowledge that was not previously ascertained by other knowledge. Grasping it is grasping the ungrasped. Therefore, knowledge that is able to obtain what is seen, and is a field of experience that was not previously present, is said to be pramana. If obtaining knowledge is pramana, then knowledge that cannot enter or, even if it enters, cannot obtain meaning, is not pramana because it is not an obtainer. This statement has no fault, for even if there is no obtaining, but there is the possibility of obtaining, it can be said to be an obtainer. For example, even if one is not wearing armor, but if one belongs to another caste that can wear armor, one can be said to be wearing armor. Thus, it is itself pramana, and there is no contradiction. If there is not even the possibility of obtaining, then it is not an obtainer at all, therefore it is not pramana at all. Mentioning "non-deception" is to exclude deceptions such as mistaking a mirage for water. Mentioning "knowledge" is to exclude non-knowledge such as the senses. Mentioning "grasping the ungrasped" is to exclude memory that grasps what has already been grasped. It has two forms: direct perception and inference. That which becomes the basis is

The basis is the five faculties such as the eye, and the consciousness that relies on them is direct perception. Relying on the faculties is merely the reason for explaining the term "direct perception." The reason for entering should be the power of the meaning of the word to make the meaning manifest. Therefore, no matter what form it takes, even if it is the ultimate nature, the meaning of making it manifest is what the term "direct perception" expresses. Because it infers from this, it is inference, that is, inferring after grasping the sign, the connection, and the recollection, hence it is subsequent inference. This is also obtained through the power of the difference in meaning. Therefore, whatever possesses a sign that abides in the difference of the subject of dharma, and also possesses the recollection of the connection between the sign and the subject, the consciousness that arises focusing on the hidden object is expressed by the term "subsequent inference." Thus, due to the distinction between direct perception and subsequent inference, valid cognition is only of two types. Saying "two types" is to dispel the wrong conceptions that valid cognition is one, three, four, five, or six. Thus, the Charvakas and others think that valid cognition is only direct perception. The Samkhyas and others think that there is also subsequent inference and that which arises from sound. The Naiyayikas think that there is also proximity. The Solarists think that there is also meaning-understanding. The Youths think that there is also object-cognition. By stating the basis of the number, the duality of other forms is clarified. Thus, grammarians also say that valid cognition is two, namely direct perception and that which arises from sound. Among these, direct perception is that which is free from conceptualization and is not mistaken. What is consciousness that is free from conceptualization? It is that which is free from conceptualization itself, that is, abandoned and not mistaken. That itself is direct perception, that is, the consciousness that has the ability to make the meaning manifest is direct perception. In conceptualization and delusion, there is no manifestation of the nature of the meaning. Thus, the conceptualization of the aspect of meaning that can be mixed with sound is conceptualization, whether it is mixed with sound or not, whatever can be mixed, what is the conceptualization of the aspect of meaning in that? Saying "can be mixed" refers to the intention of children and animals who have not fully conceptualized the sound and meaning.
