Furthermore, the nature of Dharma, its inherent characteristic, can also be understood as twofold through the distinction between what is innate and what is adventitious. For example, the yellowness of gold itself, and the blueness of verdigris. Why is it said to be adventitious? Because it relies on external conditions such as fire, transcends its own function, and can be liberated from that characteristic, therefore it should be abandoned. The other case is the opposite of this. Some adventitiousness can be recognized by the disappearance of both the beginning and the end, like the turbidity of water. Some can be recognized by the disappearance of pleasure at the end, like the verdigris on gold or the rust on iron. Conceptual designation can also be divided into two types: object-based conceptual designation and meaning-based conceptual designation. Among these, object-based conceptual designation refers to the entering and exiting of the object. Meaning-based conceptual designation refers to the entering and exiting of the meaning, and these are established depending on certain adventitious differences. Among these, the first depends on the cognizing consciousness, and the second depends on the meaning of association and opposition. Therefore, meaning-based conceptual designation should be regarded as a distinction of meaning. Object-based conceptual designation can also be divided into the object itself and the object of that object. Among these, the object itself refers to becoming an object by directly experiencing things like a vase, or even if not experienced, it can be established as an object through assumption. Even if not experienced, the object established through assumption also depends on things that are not assumed but not experienced, so it can also be established as a non-object. Furthermore, the assumption of the three times can also be established as a dharma that cannot be cognized by assumption. Among these, the object and non-object, as well as the entering and exiting of objects such as vases in different locations, are the same as before. These can be appropriately understood through the distinction between direct perception and inference. The unassumed of inference is merely the opposite of subtle nature. Meaning-based conceptual designation can also be combined into two through the distinction between substance and quality. Among these, the so-called substance refers to the two kinds of meaning related to meaning and knowledge, which can be established without relying on other things, and is the very thing of conditioned phenomena such as vases arising from the aggregation of causes and conditions. The dharma and the possessor of dharma that depend on it are the dharma and the possessor of dharma of substance. Quality refers to the characteristics of these conditioned phenomena that are not constant.
