The Teaching on the Reality of Reason. Jetari. The Teaching on the Reality of Reason. Jetari. In Sanskrit: Hetutattva Upadesha. In Tibetan: The Teaching on the Reality of Reason. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Establishing and refuting, along with what appears similar, make others understand. Direct perception and inference, along with what appears similar, make oneself understand. This is a summary of the meaning of the treatise. The meaning that the opponent himself wants to establish is what should be established. What is used to establish it is the establishment, which is the statement of the three aspects of reason. What are those three aspects? Being present in the subject is the first aspect. Being present only in the similar side is called the second aspect. Being definitely absent from the dissimilar side is called the third aspect. Therein, the subject is the extremely established property. The nature of the extremely established difference, which one wants to establish, is without contradiction with direct perception and so on. For example, the property possessing the difference that sound is impermanent is what should be established. Because it is made, this is like the reason. What is the similar side? What is similar in terms of the common characteristic of the property to be established is the similar side, such as a pot and so on. What is the dissimilar side of the reason? Where there is no property to be established, it definitely shows that there is no reason, such as space and so on. By merely showing the three aspects of reason, the statement made for the purpose of making others understand is taught as inference for others. For example, sound is impermanent, this is stating the subject. Because it is made, this is stating the reason. Like a pot and so on, this is stating the similar side. Like space and so on, this is stating the dissimilar side. It also appears in two ways: dharma similarity and non-dharma dissimilarity. Among them, first is dharma similarity: Whatever is made is seen to be impermanent. For example, a pot and so on. Sound is also made, like that. Also, dharma dissimilarity is impermanence.

If there is no action, then there is no act. For example, like space and so on, sound is also made, like this. What is a semblance of a subject? A semblance of a subject is something that is not actually a subject, because it is harmed by direct perception and so on. That is a semblance of a subject. For example, with smoke and other phenomena, the proposition is that it is produced by an intelligent cause, which contradicts direct perception, so it is a semblance of a subject. Because direct perception sees smoke arising from fire. Contradicting inference, for example, the proposition is that the words of the Vedas are not made by a person. Because sound is newly produced, it is established as made by a person. Contradicting one's own words, for example, saying that inference is not a valid cognition, in order to make others understand, saying words is inference, in order to show the meaning of others. Contradicting the world, for example, saying that a human skull is pure, because it is a limb of a living being, like a conch shell instrument and a fish broom. Contradicting realization, for example, saying that whatever exists for a period of time is impermanent. Whatever exists for a period of time is permanent, because this is the realization of worldly people. The distinction is not established, for example, the Vaisheshika says to the Samkhya that sound is destructible. The distinction is established and not established, for example, the Samkhya argues to the Buddhist that the self is combined with consciousness. Both are not established, for example, the Vaisheshika says to the Buddhist that aggregation is self-nature, or that the body is a solid self-nature. The semblance of a subject has been explained. What is a semblance of a reason? Whatever is a semblance of a reason is not an established reason. There are three semblances of a reason: unestablished, contradictory, and uncertain. Among them, because it is not established on the subject, it is called an unestablished semblance of a reason. That which is absent in the similar class and present in the dissimilar class is called contradictory.
