The Treatise Called "Eliminating Others." By Dharmottara. The Treatise Called "Eliminating Others." By Dharmottara. In Sanskrit: Apoha-nama-prakarana. In Tibetan: The Treatise Called "Eliminating Others." Homage to Manjushri, the Youth! Whatever nature of the intellect with discrimination is well shown by the distinction of others. Not intellect, not external, not that self, by what imputation of speech. To beings, he proclaimed that self, possessing all victories, without any faults. To that speaker, I prostrate, and here I explain the elimination. Here, in order to understand the object that is capable of producing the desired result, by means of well-combined words, how the object is understood, and thus the one who applies the name is made to engage in the meaning. Therefore, these are not without an object. Although there is clarity, it is the negation of being an object to be expressed. The appearance that exists in the object is also extended. Therefore, the clarity that possesses appearance does not exist, and its connection does not exist either. What is the meaning of these? It is said: The object of conceptualization is the meaning of the word. In conceptualization, the word is used to express the appearance as the meaning. And from that, conceptualization arises that focuses on the object to be expressed. Therefore, what is grasped by both the result and the proximate cause is the meaning of the word. In this regard, the universal is non-existent. Although the own-character exists, it is not the object of conceptualization because the appearance of conceptualization does not follow arising and ceasing. If different objects follow the arising and ceasing of appearance, then it is the object of knowledge, otherwise it is not. Therefore, conceptualization is not an object with an object. Nor is it an uncertain object, for example, conceptualization experiences the definite arising and ceasing of external fire and so on. Therefore, the grasping and non-grasping of direct perception are in accordance with appearance, while conceptualization is in accordance with certainty. Because direct perception follows the arising and ceasing of its own character.

It seems to follow, but there is no certainty at all. Therefore, it is by the power of its appearance that it grasps and does not grasp. The aspect of what is grasped by conceptual thought does not follow the existence and non-existence of fire, etc., but is certain of fire, etc. Therefore, this is only by the power of certainty that it grasps and does not grasp, not by the power of the appearance of what is grasped. If the action of grasping of conceptual thoughts is certainty itself, and the determination of the self-nature of conceptual thought is also the same, then, if only its own self-nature is the grasped object determined by conceptual thoughts, why would conceptual thought become an object with unreal things as its object? To this, it has already been said that whatever different thing follows the appearance of going back and forth is its object. The aspect of conceptual thought does not follow the existence and non-existence of external objects, so it is not an object. If here, because the thought of others appears, one's own self-nature becomes the object of conceptual thought, it is not because of appearance, but because of determination. Just as the action of grasping of conceptual thoughts is not grasping the aspect of what is grasped like direct perception, but is determining, so its grasped object and appearance are not, but need to be determined. One's own self-nature is also certain, and if it is certain, then it is the grasped object, that is what this means. What is said here is, why does a certain conceptual thought arise even though one's own self-nature does not exist? Therefore, conceptual thought is not the determination of one's own self-nature. If one's own self-nature exists, then will it be grasped by conceptual thought? It cannot be so, because the meaning determined by conceptual thoughts is mixed with sound, and what is mixed with sound is also what is seen to be mixed with sound at the time of convention. The seen relationship, if it is said to be the meaning itself that appears from the expression of sound, then the nature of things does not appear at the time of the action of sound, therefore, even if it does not exist, it is not determined by conceptual thought.
