A Verse Treatise Called "Establishing External Objects" Gesung A Verse Treatise Called "Establishing External Objects" Gesung In Sanskrit: Bāhyārtha siddhi kārikā nāma. In Tibetan: A Verse Treatise Called "Establishing External Objects". I prostrate to all the Tathāgatas of the three times. Whoever has attained self-benefit, And completely accomplishes all benefits for others without exception, For the sake of achieving all those aims, Having prostrated, I will analyze the meaning. The objects of experience for the consciousnesses, such as the eye that is in its proper place, are not external objects. Because they appear as objects for the sake of knowing, like the moon appearing double in a dream, and like the two minds. Thus, those who speak of mind-only establish the non-existence of external objects. Because the initial perception is not deceptive, they say that it exists, which is not my view. Is it because consciousness is deceptive, or because forms and so on are not permissible? If you say that there is no object of focus, then both of these are not good either. There is no seeing in dreams of cutting off one's own limbs and so on. If all objects were permanently non-existent, wouldn't they remain the same even when awake? You say that in the waking state, the head is cut off, and the body grows, just like in a dream. If you desire it, why do you abandon it, and strive to obtain it? If you say that everything is entered into through delusion, then the name does not change. Consciousness is not deceptive, not confused, and deception is confusion. Regarding objects, times, and different people, whatever consciousness is not deceptive, that should be known as non-confusion. There is no other characteristic of non-confusion. From knowing long and short, etc., distinctions are made, such as "one who has yoga." Because it would follow that one is not omniscient, one is not liberated from the aspect of duality. How can it be understood that the Buddha himself is deceived by it? Why is it not possible for deception to occur in everything, like in dreams and so on? If you say it is because the habitual tendencies are strong, why are dreams not also stable? From that, seeing cities, monasteries, and measurable things, etc., is similar. The mind that arises without sense objects, the habitual tendencies, moment by moment, obtain maturation and interruption, which are said to be the cause of sense faculties and objects. Whose consciousness is of one nature, and does not arise from sense faculties and objects, that, that nature of his, is it permanently stable or does it change? If it is because it is equally endowed with sleep and so on,

Is it not maturation? Although there is a cause for maturation, maturation cannot be completely exhausted. Seeing in a dream during sleep, there it is not stable before and after, how can confusion cause the completely matured self-nature to be completely exhausted? Because of the lack of autonomy, in the absence of a stable cause, obtaining maturation and being completely exhausted again and again is acceptable. The unfailing habit is stable, from where is it considered to be manufactured? If it is because form, etc., are not suitable, then it will be discussed below. If it is because complete maturation is stable, so it does not deceive when awake, then during the period when dimness continues to be stable, why would it not be equally non-deceptive? Even if fully accepted by reason, it is because the target is deception, and it does not deceive even for non-reason, so it is not considered to be manufactured by reason. The power of placement and complete maturation, because it arises from other things, not from itself, just as sesame seeds arise from flowers, and seeds arise from water, etc. From wherever and however much it arises, it produces a fruit that is compatible with itself there, so habits are needed. It will not be destroyed, like fire and smoke. Things that arise from other meanings, some will be commanded from karma, like the flower of the nose, and the smell arises from sesame upon contact. Here, from the consciousness of receiving, seven consciousnesses will arise, and there the seed of it will be placed, and placement is also what makes it mature. Therefore, because there is no thing that arises from other meanings, habits cannot be placed and increased, so say those skilled in power. However, if from one's own continuum, the wisdom of realization arises, and then the seed is placed there and matured, is mine also like that? Because of aversion to this side, it relies entirely on the consciousness of receiving. If both are the same, then one does not need to rely on the other. Things that arise from the meaning of autonomy, wisdom places powers, and increases with differences in place, time, body, etc., there is no fault in that side. From the consciousness called receiving, there is no other cause, it has no very close connection with it. For things that are established only in reason, what is the use of establishing knowledge, etc.? Because it does not contradict incompatible kinds, everything should be understood as having remainders.
