A Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, Glorious Dharmakīrti. A Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition. Glorious Dharmakīrti. In Sanskrit: Pramāṇavārtika-ṭīkā-vr̥tti. In Tibetan: A Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, First Chapter. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Dispelling the net of conceptualization, Possessing a profound and vast body, The rays of light of Samantabhadra, Shining forth everywhere, I pay homage! Since most beings are attached to the mundane and lack the power of wisdom, they not only do not seek the meaning of well-spoken words, but also hate them with the stains of jealousy. Therefore, I do not think that this will benefit others. Since the mind is accustomed to well-spoken words for a long time, I am delighted to do this in order to generate a willingness to accept them. Discriminating between what is meaningful and meaningless depends on inference, and therefore, this is explained in order to correct the wrong understanding of it. Belonging to the subject and pervading it, This reason has three aspects. If it is absent, it will not arise, therefore it is necessary. A pseudo-reason is different from this. The subject is the property-possessor. If it is said that it should not be established because it is not necessary, it is not so, because it is to negate that all the properties of the property-possessor, because it is one of its aspects. In order to realize that it is a property-possessor that can be established. Such as "it is that" and "it is to be apprehended by the eye" and so on should be abandoned. If it is said that even by saying "property" it can be established as the basis of the property-possessor, and by the force of saying "property-possessor" it can be established as the property-possessor to be established, it is not so, because the property-possessor of the example is also close. If it is said that by "pervading it" it is established that the property-possessor of the example exists, and therefore by saying "the property of the property-possessor" it can be completely grasped as the property-possessor to be established, it is not so, because it is also necessary to say it again because it is added as already established, just as only existing in the similar, it is established to return from the dissimilar, just as saying non-existence on the non-existent to be established. If the meaning is understood by implication, it is difficult to understand, and in order to completely avoid this fault, "subject" is also said. If it is the nature of the subject, then it needs to depend on its difference.

If it is said that it is non-commonness because it does not involve others, it is not so. For example, like saying "black people are good at jumping," it is because it is distinguished by distinguishing those who do not possess it. For example, like saying "the Satyasiddhi school is good at jumping," it is not by distinguishing those who possess others. It should be explained. Its part is its dharma according to the speaker's intention, but it is not a part of it, because the word "part" does not refer to the whole. Pervasion is either only it has the pervader, or only it has the pervaded. This explains the certainty of following and reversing, and also explains it with the self-nature as it is, and also explains the property of the subject. These are the three reasons of the nature of effect, self-nature, and non-perception. For example, from smoke, there is fire here. Because it is a sal tree, this is a tree. In some differences of the subject, there is no pot, because it is non-perception, because it is the nature of perception. If it exists, it will only become an existent that can be perceived, otherwise it is not. Therefore, it is said to be an existent that becomes the nature of perception. Two of them are to establish things, and one is the reason for refutation. Having self-nature and connection, there is actually no confusion in meaning, because that is its self-nature. If that is its self-nature, then is there no difference between what is to be established and what is established? No, because the differences of all dharmas have been examined. It should be explained like this. Thus it is said that inference and these terms of inferable are all only because of the difference between dharma and the possessor of dharma existing in the mind. The difference between dharma and the possessor of dharma itself is caused by the appearance of consciousness, but it is not the thing itself, because the self-made distinctions of consciousness are not the basis of things. If things are understood through the objects they examine, then only things will not be obtained. The effect is also related to self-nature, because its self-nature is produced from that. These two knowledges of what can be inferred, because they are not produced from things, are there.
