The Commentary on Examining Relationships Dharmakīrti The Commentary on Examining Relationships Dharmakīrti In Sanskrit: Saṃbandhaparīkṣāvṛtti. In Tibetan: The Commentary on Examining Relationships. Homage to Mañjuśrī! Desiring to refute the existence of relationship as a real entity, [the author] speaks of "solely dependent on others," and so forth. "Dependent on others" means relying on others. If that is a relationship, then the relata are either established or unestablished. The unestablished is not a real entity because it is of the nature of non-existence. If the relata are established, then what dependence on others is there? There is no dependence, therefore there is no relationship. If it is said that even though established, it is still somewhat unestablished, then it will not be merely dependent on others for the sake of being established, because it will not escape the fault of conceptualizing the aspects of faults arising from being established and unestablished. A single entity cannot have both the nature of being established and unestablished. Since there is no dependence on others in that way, either established or on the other side, therefore the relationship of all entities is not a real entity in reality. Since there are no entities, the establishment of conceptualization should not be refuted. If it is said that the mixing of natures is a relationship, but not solely dependent on others, then that is not reasonable. Because it is two, if it is the nature of the two relata, how can the mixing of natures become the characteristic of being the same as one's own nature? It cannot become so. Even if it becomes one, since there are no two relata, what relationship is there? Because this is established from two. Or, if it is thought that mixing is not becoming one nature, then what is it? It is being without interruption. If it is said in this way, even if it is so, what is being refuted? Because being without interruption is merely being without interruption, so it will not become that relationship is a real entity. If being without interruption is a relationship, then why is it not considered a relationship when there is interruption? Because in both cases, the two relata abide in their own nature without any difference. Do not say that meeting and so forth are merely assembled for the meaning of being without interruption. Because in that way, the characteristic of mixing natures is also not a relationship, therefore it is also a difference in nature, entities.

Apart from imputing through conceptual proliferation to the distinct self-nature of all things, there is no truly existent connection. If it is said that dependence on others is connection, but not a mixture of self-nature, then here too, when depending on others, it becomes something with connection due to dependence. Does it depend on something that exists, or does it depend on something that does not exist? If it does not exist, then how does it depend? For a thing whose self-nature is not established, there is no quality of dependence, so what is the connection of what with what? If it exists, it is not entirely independent, because all self-natures are produced. What does a thing that does not need to depend on, depend on? How does it depend on becoming a connection? The rest can be discussed in a similar way. In order to avoid this fault, there are two possibilities: two things with connection are described as qualities by a single connection, or a single thing with different meanings, or a dharma without difference, or an unspeakable real entity, and the cause of connection. If it is thought to be a connection, then for the aspect where the connection is not different in meaning, the two things with connection become merely imputed, and there is no connection at all. Even so, since the connection is not different from the connected, it becomes one again. If it becomes an unspeakable real entity, then according to reason, it cannot transcend the conceptual proliferation of forms that are different or not different in meaning. For the aspect where there is no difference in meaning, neither connection nor the connected exist. Even if it is allowed that there is a connection of difference or of the other side, However, what is the connection between it and the two? What is the connection between the same thing and the two as things with connection? In reality, it does not exist. Just as there is the fault mentioned earlier, just as two things with connection have no connection, so too, it and the two things with connection have no connection. Otherwise, what hatred is there in the slight connection that exists between two things with connection? Furthermore, if it is thought to be a connection because it is related to the meaning of one connection, then in this case, for the connection and the two things with connection, it must also be admitted that there is a connection, because such a connection must be admitted. For it too, there is only one meaning of connection, so it will become finite or infinite. If for some things, even the meaning of a single connection cannot be established, then,
