Abridged Verses on the Treatise on Valid Cognition. Dharmakīrti. Abridged Verses on the Treatise on Valid Cognition. Dharmakīrti. The Extensive Treatise on Valid Cognition is Here. In Sanskrit: Pramāṇavārttikākārikā. In Tibetan: Abridged Verses on the Treatise on Valid Cognition. Homage to the Noble Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta! Cutting through the net of conceptualization, possessing a profound and vast body, the rays of light of Samantabhadra, shining in all directions, I pay homage! Since most people are attached to the mundane and lack the power of wisdom, they not only do not seek the meaning of good explanations, but also hate them with the stains of jealousy. Therefore, I do not think that this will benefit others, but my mind has long been accustomed to good explanations, and I am pleased with this for cultivating the attitude of readily accepting them. That which has the property of being present in the subject, that reason is threefold, because it necessarily does not arise without it. An apparent reason is different from that, the reason has some amount of its own nature, that which does not arise without it is the effect, the nature of the reason is just existence, and the nature of having a connection, valid cognitions do not apply to them, that which does not apply to the absence of an effect, depending on the specific differences of the reason, knowing that some do not have an effect, contradiction and the effect are established, the cause and the nature can be observed, the self is not established, the four types of non-apprehension with no meaning, the cause that contradicts that, whatever is the combination of what is seen, those causes are contradictory, without which it is prone to error. Contradictory effects also depend on place and, time, etc., otherwise it will become confused, like the four fallacies in the thesis. From the collection of causes, an effect arises, whatever is the subsequent inference, because it does not depend on another meaning, that is said to be the nature of the cause. The results of the collection, such as abilities, the effect associated with change, uncertainty is that very nature, because there is the possibility of obstacles. Depending on one collection, taste is understood from form, etc., it is the subsequent inference of the cause-property, like the change of wood from smoke. If there is no application of ability, then the absence of taste is the cause of another. Thus, understanding past times, etc., that is the sign of the effect.

Born from... May there be auspiciousness! The result of the collection of causes, whatever is inferred from it, because it cannot possess remainder, just like inferring desire from the body. Not seeing in the dissimilar aspect, merely from seeing the general result, inferential knowledge appears to be a valid cognition, like inferring attachment from words, and so forth. Not seeing in the dissimilar aspect, merely that is not without error, because there is the possibility of error, like the ripening of fruit. Whatever, merely from not seeing, greatly shows the opposite, that is because it is the cause of doubt, therefore it is said to possess remainder. For the three modes of reasoning, by that, the opposite meaning of non-establishment, and as an antidote to those with error, a definite statement is made. As an antidote to those with error, whatever states a dissimilar dharma, if it is an unseen result, even if it is not stated, it will be understood. Even with the word 'does not exist,' if it is not merely non-existence, if the reason for how it does not exist is stated, then it will be understood as non-existence. If it changes because of not seeing, if it is an error with remainder, even the opposite can become reasoning, an unestablished combination is not to be expressed. Because of not seeing, it becomes a reasoning that specifically separates. If another valid cognition harms, now it is not that there is no non-seeing. Similarly, for other situations as well, it is possible to be harmed by another valid cognition. Because of not seeing, for seeing touch, it is non-possessive and without error. From the differences of place and so forth, the power of substances appears different. For this, seeing one, it is not reasonable to ascertain that the other exists. On me and the earth, there is knowledge and so forth, for what does not well establish non-existence, is not that whatever is not observed, is it reasoning that does not establish non-existence? Therefore, merely related to that, self-nature by self-nature, because of transformation or cause, the result is without error. If it is not like that, because of the transformation of one, how does the other transform? Saying a person does not have a horse, is it that they also do not have livestock? Similarly, because one is close to one, how does the other become close? Saying a person has livestock, is it that they also have a horse? Therefore, for dissimilar dharma examples, this basis is not necessarily desired. Even if those are not there, it is said that this is not there.
