If it is said "like space," then with reference to treatises that assert the non-existence of space, both are not established as "non-existent." Not combining means that there is absolutely no metaphorical combination for that meaning, so for things like a vase, only the two qualities of the proving and the to-be-proven are shown, such as stating "being made" and "being impermanent" for a vase. Combining in reverse is like saying "whatever is made is impermanent," instead of saying "whatever is impermanent is made." These are similar positive examples. A similar example of dissimilar qualities is one where the quality to be proven is not contradictory. For example, impermanent things are not seen as obstructed, like atoms. Atoms are the quality to be proven, and permanence is not contradictory, because atoms that are not permanent are permanent. The quality of the proving is unobstructed. For example, saying "like the actions of others," the proving does not contradict the contradictory to-be-proven, because the actions of others are unobstructed. Both not contradicting means with reference to treatises that exist, if it is said "like space," space is permanent, and the quality of being unobstructed does not contradict, because space is permanent, because it is unobstructed. Showing contradiction is like saying "like a vase," because impermanence is visible, and because it is seen as obstructed. Reversing the contradiction is like saying "whatever is obstructed is impermanent." Thus, the to-be-proven, the reason, and the examples are similar, but not truly proving. Therefore, one should know it directly, and one should know that there are only two valid cognitions: direct perception and inference. Here, direct perception is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous, and because it sees manifest individually, free from conceptualization of terms and so on for things like forms, it is called direct perception. Inference is seeing meaning in reliance on signs, and the reason has the three aspects, which have been explained before. These infer meanings based on signs, and possess correct definitive knowledge, and knowledge of fire or

Always knowing and so on, is said to be inference. For these two valid cognitions, correct knowledge is the result of valid cognition, because it realizes its own nature. Because it can measure things that have the ability to function, it is also a valid cognition. Knowing conceptually is also like an appearance of direct perception. The conceptualizations of knowledge, such as a vase, that arise are like an appearance of direct perception, because the nature of the object does not appear to that knowledge. If a seeming reason precedes, and then knowledge arises that appears like seeing the object, that is like an appearance of inferential valid cognition. As previously stated, taking a non-true reason as a basis, the knowledge that arises from inferring the object is all like an appearance of inferential valid cognition, because it does not correctly recognize. Then, if the faults of the proponent are correctly stated, that is a correct refutation. Not fully stating the limbs of the proposition, as well as the faults of what is to be established, the unestablished reason, the uncertain reason, the contradictory reason, and the reasons of the examples have been clearly explained, because it clearly understands the questions of the opponent, so it is a correct refutation. If the faults of the proponent are not clearly stated, or are not faults, that is a seeming refutation. Saying that the complete limbs of the proposition are incomplete, saying that what is to be established is faulty when it is not, saying that the example is not established when the reason is established, saying that the reason is uncertain when it is certain, saying that the reason is contradictory when it is not, saying that the example is faulty when it is not, like this, all are seeming refutations. Because they cannot clearly explain the faults of other tenets, they say that they are not faults. Let this meaning be put aside for now. This slightly explained meaning of the words is initially just the aspect of the proposition. Those that are reasonable and unreasonable should be understood from other excellent sources. The treatise on valid cognition called "Entering the Path of Reasoning" composed by the great scholar Dignāga is complete. Translated from India by the Chinese translator Tang Sanzang.

Later, it was translated into Tibetan by the Chinese Geshe Sing Gyang Jue and the Tibetan virtuous friend Ton Shon. Afterwards, the great Chinese Mahayana monk Dharma Jewel, who was ordained in the Sarvastivada school, carefully compared and revised the Chinese and Tibetan versions in the glorious Sakya Monastery, and translated it into an accurate translation. The Chinese version is called "Entering the Path of Reasoning." Nowadays, Tibetans call it "The Door of Reasoning." The treatise on epistemology is called "Entering the Path of Reasoning," by Dignāga.
