A Treatise on Epistemology Called "Entering the Path of Reasoning" By Dignāga A Treatise on Epistemology Called "Entering the Path of Reasoning" By Dignāga In Chinese: Ru Li Lu In Tibetan: A Treatise on Epistemology Called "Entering the Path of Reasoning". Homage to Mañjuśrī! The ability to establish and the ability to refute, along with semblances, cause others to understand. Direct perception and inference, along with semblances, cause oneself to understand. Here, the phrase "thus it is said" is extracted from the entirety of the meaning of the treatises. Among them, terms such as categories are used to establish (the thesis). The subject, the reason, and dividing them into many, are to clearly show the opponents the meaning they do not understand. Here, the characteristic of what is to be established is that it establishes the difference of the property on the subject of the property to be established, and this, which one wants to establish oneself, is what is to be established. For example, establishing that sound is impermanent. The characteristic of the reason is that it possesses the three aspects. What are the three aspects? Existing in the locus that is the property of the subject, existing in the similar class, and not existing in the dissimilar class. What are the similar class and the dissimilar class? What is similar in kind to the property to be established is called the similar class. For example, in establishing impermanence, pots and so on are also impermanent, so they are the similar class. The dissimilar class is what is not similar in kind to the property to be established. For example, whatever is permanent is not made, like space and so on. These are the very fact of being made or having just arisen, are the property of the subject, and are definitely present in the similar class. It is not present in the dissimilar class, it is the reason for impermanence. There are also two types of examples: the first is the example of the similar property, and the second is the example of the dissimilar property. The example of the similar property is that whatever is the meaning, it exists in the similar class as the reason, for example, what is made is seen to be impermanent, like pots and so on. The example of the dissimilar property is that whatever does not have the meaning to be established, the reason does not exist, this is what is to be shown. For example, whatever is permanent is seen not to be made, like space and so on. Here, in terminology, impermanence
