The Treatise Called "A Compendium on Valid Cognition," A Chapter. By Dignāga. The Treatise Called "A Compendium on Valid Cognition." By Dignāga. In Sanskrit: Pramāṇasamuccaya-nāma-prakaraṇa. In Tibetan: The Treatise Called "A Compendium on Valid Cognition." Homage to the Buddha! Having paid homage to the Teacher, the Sugata, the Protector, Who has become valid cognition and intends to benefit beings, In order to establish valid cognition, from all my own treatises, Having gathered them, I will here make one out of the various scattered ones. Direct perception and subsequent inference, are valid cognitions; the two measure characteristics. For the sake of properly combining with this valid cognition, Others are not existent. Repeated cognition is also not, because it would become endless, like memory, etc. That which is free from conceptualization, which combines with name and lineage, etc., is direct perception. Because it is the uncommon cause, Its designation is made by sense consciousness. There, because it is produced by many objects, It is the object of the self-meaning, the universal characteristic. That which has the nature of many entities, Is impossible to realize by sense consciousness. The nature that is not taught by the designations of what is known individually, is the object of sense consciousness. Mental consciousness is also, with regard to objects and attachment, etc., Self-awareness, without conceptualization. As taught by the masters of yogis, Only the unmixed object is seen. Constancy is also considered to be self-awareness. It is not with regard to the object, because that is conceptualization. Erroneous and conventional knowledge, and, Inference arises from subsequent inference. It is called memory and manifest desire. Apparent direct perception, including dizziness, etc., Because it cognizes as having activity. If it is the result, for the measurer, It is established as valid cognition itself. It is also not without distinction. Or, self-awareness is the result, From its nature, the object is determined. The appearance of the object itself, this, Valid cognition measures it. It is said: When the appearance is what is to be measured, Valid cognition and its result, Grasping and individual consciousness, because of this, These three should not be made different. Knowledge of the object and knowledge of that, By distinction, the nature of mind is only two. Later, also from memory, The two natures and self-awareness are established. Because without experience, this is not. If it is experienced by another consciousness, Then for the endless one, there is also memory, Likewise, transferring to another object, It would become nonexistent, because that is also seen. The debaters and disputants are not, Surely they think there is no essence.

Partially translated scriptures. Therefore, I will examine. Various consciousnesses arising from that object. Here it is said, "It is direct perception." If "that object" is used to refer to everything, then which is not solely from that object? If it is said to be an object, then even consciousnesses such as memory do not depend on others. It is also said: How the appearance is, that does not exist. Therefore, in the ultimate sense, because of focusing on the accumulation of the five aggregates, no conceptual designation is made for it. This is an intermediate verse. Separated from the nature of things, it is neither what is said nor the object here, but will be indicated in a general way. Therefore, no conceptual designation is made for it. Those with reason say that the consciousness arising from the combination of valid cognition and object, which is not to be conceptually designated, is non-erroneous, and is the nature of clinging, is direct perception. That is also unreasonable. For the consciousness arising from the sense and object, conceptual designations and so on are not possible. It is not possible to grasp things with intervals, nor to obtain additional consciousness. The sense cannot move away from its basis, and cannot grasp the object. Or, pleasure and so on are not measurable, or there is another sense, namely the mental sense. If it is said that it is obtained because there is no obstruction, then the other senses have no sound or meaning. There is no result in the determined meaning. From the characteristic of consciousness, it will be said that other objects are the result. If it is said that it is not a difference, because it is different. If it is said that that exists or does not exist, then it is not, it will also become what is to be differentiated. For all things such as not understanding, it is not. Because there is no turning back, it is not a result. The Vaisheshikas believe that whatever arises from the combination of self, sense, mind, and object is other. Considering the general and the particular, and considering matter, qualities, and actions, it should not be combined and said to be direct perception. Because it has the meaning of observing the object. It should not be combined with differences. Not one. Forms and so on also become one. If seen, then for the sense it is not that. Because other senses will become meaningless. Even if the self-object is different, it can be grasped. All the senses will grasp. If it is not matter and so on, then if so, because it does not exist, it is not the object of others. If it is thought that the objects are the same, then it will also become undesirable. Uncertain, that is said elsewhere. Not everything is said to be established. Even if the senses are not different, consciousness, because it is different, if it is different, from where does it become other without difference? The Samkhyas believe that it is the function of the ears and so on.
