The chapter of subduing the dragon through the gate of sorrowlessness. The chapter of subduing the dragon through the gate of sorrowlessness. In Sanskrit: Aśokamukhanāgavanīyaparicchedaḥ. In Tibetan: The chapter of subduing the dragon through the gate of sorrowlessness. Thus I have heard. One hundred years after the Buddha, the Bhagavan, passed away, in the city of Pataliputra (circa 3rd century BCE, modern-day Patna, India), there arose a king named Ashoka, who ruled over a quarter of the Chakravartin's territory. He summoned five hundred merchants for the sake of wealth and said: Wise ones, go and bring various jewels from the great ocean, and then come back. When they gradually went to the great ocean, they filled their ships with various treasures such as jewels, gold, silver, diamonds, beryl, sparkling stones, and coral, and set off towards Jambudvipa. When they were returning, the dragon destroyed the ships in the middle of the ocean. Then, those merchants returned with only the remnants of their lives and the ships. When they gradually arrived in the city of Pataliputra, King Ashoka heard that the merchants had returned. As it is said: Grass is never satisfied with burning with fire, The ocean is never satisfied with water, Here in this delightful heavenly realm, Beings are never satisfied with the six senses. Because this is the root of desire, he generated a greedy mind, thinking: I should make a place that does not scatter wealth. Then, in his pond and garden, adorned with all the ornaments, with banners and victory banners raised, decorated with curtains and cloths, pleasing fragrances were diffused. In the pond filled with water as clear as ice, filled with pollen like crystal, covered with utpala (藏文,梵文天城体utpala,梵文罗马拟音utpala,汉语字面意思:blue lotus), lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses. Cuckoos, cuckoos, peacocks, parrots, partridges, cuckoos, kalavinka birds, and titmice sang sweet bird songs, making it delightful. Pīvāṅgas, flutes, clay drums, good sounds, hand drums, paṭahas, large drums, and conches were constantly played. Ministers, townspeople, people of the region, and beings gathered.
