The Lamp of Generating Faith. The Lamp of Generating Faith. May the Lamp of Generating Faith be auspicious! To those who cause sentient beings to generate faith in the sacred Dharma, To the sacred Guru who generates faith, And to the Three Jewels from whom virtues arise through devotion, I prostrate with reverence. The fire of hatred burns one's own being, The darkness of ignorance obscures the eye of wisdom. Falling into the abyss of samsara, suffering never ceases, Self-bound in the prison of samsara, chained in iron. For the sake of future beings, I will now begin to write. If one looks well at one's own being, This human body is extremely difficult to obtain. Like throwing peas against a wall, one might stick, But all fall to the ground and are gone. Difficult to obtain is a human body, Consider the number of sentient beings. More difficult than a yoke hole and a turtle meeting in one ocean, From the animal realm, Humanity is even more difficult to obtain, therefore, those with human rights, Should practice the sacred Dharma to achieve its fruit. When this human body, like wealth given in charity, is obtained, If liberation, which is beneficial to this, is not achieved, Then this leisure and endowment, so complete, Do not waste this life that is so difficult to obtain! Looking at the ways of the world, They do not like liberation but rejoice in sin. They are jealous of those above, competitive with those equal, Proud towards those below, and arrogant when praised. If unpleasant words are spoken, anger arises from within, Having abandoned one's own liberation, They cling to illusory children and wealth. Abandoning the Dharma of refuge, forsaking the path of liberation, Craving worldly affairs, foolish children and wealth, etc. No matter how much wealth is accumulated through sin, One will bear the ripening of sin, falling into ignorance. The accumulated wealth will be taken by others, Though useless as a corpse, they consider themselves good. Trapped in the prison of samsara, they do not think of escaping, Without support in the future, they cling to food, wealth, and children, Severing the loving-kindness of faithful parents, They boast of their strength, destroying the pride of others, They generate attachment to the wealth and objects of faith of others, They speak of harming others without being asked, When listening to teachings, they think of other things, When seeing the Three Jewels, they speak ill of them without hesitation, When seeing sentient beings, they generate hatred and murderous intent, They say that this life is happy, but the next will be miserable. Such sentient beings, Do not waste this human body, alas, how pitiful!

Alas! Like the supreme continent, it is difficult to be born in this world. In this place where countless sentient beings dwell, This human body is extremely difficult to obtain. Even if one becomes deaf, blind, or lame, it is difficult to practice the Dharma. Having obtained a body free from deceit and encountered youthful times, If one does not practice the sacred Dharma, one's human life is wasted. If one uses a golden vessel adorned with precious jewels To sweep away filth and vomit, Even worse than that is if one is born as a human And commits sins. Those people are truly foolish. When the time of sickness, old age, and death arrives, The human body is wasted, and regret is of no use. For example, when one goes to the enemy's side without caution, After being captured by the enemy, one feels regret. Even if regret arises, it is useless; one cannot escape by oneself. Therefore, one should strive in the Dharma even more. Fearing future dangers, build the foundation of a city in advance. Fearing falling into the lower realms in the future, practice virtue in advance. In the course of years, one does not stay for even a moment. When will there be time? Life has no leisure. Years and months pass, and death approaches. One's own life is like a tree on a cliff. The Lord of Death, the demon, is like a rushing river. Birth, old age, and death come in turn. Impermanence and change are like the seasons of the year. All the people who have died in the past Constantly hoped and accumulated children and wealth. But children and wealth are of no benefit to the body. Only one's own karma, good and bad, accompanies one. Wealth and possessions are like birds on a tree. With the certainty of impermanence, cut off attachment with strength. Happiness and suffering are impermanent, like yesterday. When one prepares to go to the Dharma, relatives and friends gather. They praise one's virtues and say one must do worldly deeds. They tempt one with wealth and interrupt one. It is like holding a poisonous vase and coming to harm. Listening to relatives and friends who say they are acting for one's own good Is like blocking happiness and pushing one off a cliff. The children and relatives of samsara are like poisonous flowers. Seeing them is pleasing, but they are the cause of the lower realms. When one is deceived by the Lord of Death, the demon, Lying on the final bed, the body suffers. At the end of food, even vomiting only fills the charnel ground. Parents and relatives surround one, At that time, what will benefit oneself? Quarreling over years is useless; heroes cannot fight. A fortress cannot withstand it; wealth cannot deceive it. Relatives cannot help; there is no escape. Even if the pain is great, relatives cannot bear it. While alive, one should
