When craving ceases, joy arises. Those who know the cause of suffering, They will never delight in desire. Knowing it as the source of pain in the world, May you obtain the teachings to tame these. Chapter One on Abandoning Desire. Sentient beings are utterly defeated by various thoughts, By viewing the unbearable desire as pure, Desire becomes a field, growing exceedingly, And tightly binds with its own fetters. Those who delight in the pacification of conceptual thoughts, And constantly remember the meditation on ugliness, They have completely abandoned craving, And will cut off their own bonds. Covered by the dark net of desire, Obscured by the covering of craving, Bound by the fetters of carelessness, Like a fish caught in a trap. When a person indulges in carelessness, Craving grows like a creeper, And they will follow after birth, old age, sickness, and death, Like an infant desiring milk from its mother's breast. Those who are slaves to desire, delight in pleasure, And contemplate on pleasant things, They will wander in samsara again and again, Like a monkey desiring gardens and fruits. Whoever constantly desires happiness, Will fall into the net of birth, old age, sickness, and death, And the states of misery will rush towards them, Like a rabbit running through a net. Sentient beings bound by the noose of existence, Their minds cling to existence and enjoyment, And they are extremely attached to children and wives, They will repeatedly obtain suffering. Beings separated from accomplishment and happiness, And associated with the activities of demons, They will be destroyed by fear and suffering, Like the tip of grass and leaves burned by fire. Here, those who abandon such craving, Are without craving for craving and enjoyment, The monk who subdues the power of existence, Will pass into complete nirvana without remainder. Whoever relies on the difficult-to-abandon in this world, The woman of existence, Their sorrow will increase greatly, Like rain falling on grass. Whoever abandons the difficult-to-abandon in this world, The woman of existence, Their sorrow will cease, Like a drop of water on a lotus. Like pulling up grass for the sake of ushira, Pull out the root of existence along with its base, The person

Accompanied by craving, one will wander and transmigrate for a long time. Uproot craving from its source, and there will be no sorrow or fear. Again and again they draw near, again and again they enter the womb. Due to temporary changes and other changes, sentient beings will go towards light and the path. Here, abandon that craving that is difficult to abandon, abandon it and cut off its seed. That craving will disappear, and one will not revolve again. Because it is the cause of the ocean of existence, craving for objects is the basis of fruit. If that net covering the vines, the thing that brings suffering, is not tamed, this suffering will again and again, in all forms, not cease. For example, if a tree is not uprooted from its roots, even if it is cut down, it will only grow again. Likewise, if the subtle growth of existence is not uprooted, this suffering will occur again and again. For example, just as a weapon made by oneself, kills oneself with the power of that thief. Likewise, the existence arising from the inner mind, gradually kills sentient beings. Therefore, knowing the faults of suffering arising from existence, abandon craving, do not draw near, and become a truly supreme Bhikshu. The chapter on abandoning craving, the second. Mindfulness is the place of immortality, while carelessness is the place of death. The careless do not die, but the careless always die. Knowing that difference, the wise are endowed with mindfulness. Rejoicing greatly in mindfulness is the joy of the noble ones. Relying on accomplished, supreme bliss is touching Nirvana. When the wise, through mindfulness, have destroyed carelessness, at that time, ascending to the top of the palace of wisdom, cutting off sorrow from the sorrowless, those who rely look down upon the children on the earth from the peaks of the mountains. Through diligence and mindfulness, and through right contemplation and taming, having made an island of the wise, one can turn back the great river. Endowed with diligence and endowed with mindfulness, conduct pure and acting after investigation, rightly guarding and living by the Dharma, the fame of the mindful greatly increases. Morality, Samadhi, supreme wisdom, learning in the Buddha's trainings, attaining peace and always possessing mindfulness, the protector is without sorrow. Not relying on inferior dharmas,
