A Letter to the Lama. Monastery. A Letter to the Lama. Monastery. In Sanskrit: Guru Lekha. In Tibetan: A Letter to the Lama. Homage to the All-Knowing One! For the sake of the bodhisattvas, having become enlightened in the Dense Array world from Tushita. In order to benefit the beings of Tushita, you became the holy White Umbrella. Then, for the sake of beings here, you became Shakyamuni. May you, the omniscient, stainless, and without inherent existence, be victorious! To the wise and vastly intelligent Lama. The means of abandoning desire, heedlessness, and afflictions. As the Buddha said, I will briefly state these. Like medicine, please consider its benefits and listen. Just as a precious jewel is received from the hand of a low-born person. Wise beings receive it with great respect. I, a completely ignorant person, beseech you with love. This letter deserves to be received with great respect. The profound and vast sutras of the Teacher. Although you, the Khenpo, have completely understood them. Like the food of killing eaten for the sake of the body. Please also teach what I have said. Mountain deer, elephants, butterflies, and fish. The five bees are conquered by the five senses. If conquered by one sense, by which will all five be conquered? If one always clings to the senses, why will one not be conquered? Desires are burning everywhere. They should be thoroughly condemned, killed, and regarded as enemies. Like a counter-attacker, a grass lamp, a Kimapaka fruit, the edge of a sword. A pile of torches, poisonous leaves. A hook, thorns, unclean filth. The cause of desire causes sentient beings to fall into hell. They will be reborn as pretas and animals. Craving desire will not be reborn in the happy realms. And will never attain nirvana. You have obtained leisure and possess wisdom. You have entered the teachings of the Victorious One. Please abandon desire, craving, heedlessness. And all afflictions. Because desire arises from conceptual thought. Having understood the root of desire. You should not engage in conceptual thought. Then these will not arise in you. From desires, sorrow arises. From desires, fear arises. If desires are completely abandoned. Then there is no sorrow and no fear. The result of desire is suffering. The beginning is sweet, but the fruit is bitter. If a torch is not dropped from the hand. In the end, it will burn the child. For jeweled earrings, sons, and wives.

Contemplate what gives rise to craving, Whatever bonds are made of iron, wood, or hemp, The Noble One says they are not strong, Whatever bonds of desire are loose, The Noble One says are very difficult to untangle. The steadfast do not look to the pleasure of desire, Having cut them, they quickly depart. Whatever the variety of the world, whether desired or not, The conceptualization of a person, attachment, is desire. Although dwelling in that variety of the world, Nevertheless, in this world, subdue desire. People have no desire to rely on, Clinging to whatever desire, because it is impermanent, Since there is no rebirth, the mind completely abandons it, The Noble One says, "Do not change the place of death." Generate aspiration and do not create outflows, With a mind without flaws and mindfulness, Whoever is not attached to desires separately, The Noble One says that is moving upwards. Like a potter with dust, The wise, in stages, For a moment, a short time, Should remove their own impurities. Like a shoemaker with leather, Like a well-tamed shoe that is comfortable, Whatever desires are abandoned, That is complete and perfect bliss. If you desire all happiness, Completely abandon all desires. By completely abandoning all desires, You will attain the supreme happiness. As long as you follow desires, You will never be satisfied. Those who, with wisdom, Can restrain, they attain satisfaction. Because one is not satisfied by desire, Satisfaction through wisdom is bliss. A person satisfied by wisdom, Will not be under the power of existence. Whoever is a person attached to desire, Alas, they do not rejoice in the Dharma. When living a little, One will not see obstacles arise. Evil wisdom is destroyed by enjoyment, They do not seek the other shore, With ruined thoughts, due to desire and existence, They destroy themselves and others as well. Even if the gods rain down desires, Those with desire will not be satisfied. Even if there were divine desires, Equal to Indra, Understand that I am not satisfied as much as possible, And practice well. Desire has little flavor and many faults, The wise understand in their hearts. The fully enlightened Buddhas and Shravakas, Even with the desires of the gods, Do not rejoice more.
