Homage to all the Tathagatas. You are worthy of being visited, But why have you not been invited? This is not disrespect, nor is it contempt, But the hindrance of old age and illness. I, like all sentient beings, Treat you with loving-kindness, But your qualities make me Especially close and particularly attentive to you. Although there is much to advise, Who can prevent all advice? Your qualities are so great, That I have become bold to speak frankly. With irreversible qualities, Known in all directions, Even great people can endure, Without hesitation, like a friend. Therefore, for the sake of praising you, Please listen to this request of mine, From the two aspects of accomplishment and abandonment, Choose what is appropriate to practice. Places that bring joy, Youth that makes one proud, And the freedom to act as one pleases, Are all paths to meaningless actions. Abandon these three sources of ruin, The wise should rely on the holy, With the power of tamed senses and wisdom, Practice from the lowest level upwards. The foundation that you possess, These three parts, Tame them with Dharma and discipline, And make them into qualities. If kings and ministers, Possess a broad mind and compassion, Always free from afflictions, They can rule the country with such actions. In this world, with wisdom, For the weak and helpless, For things that should not be done, Demons will take advantage. Therefore, as long as you do not go beyond that place, In order to increase wisdom, Please strive to joyfully gather those wise people. Read the treatises of the Dharma, Listen to the meaning of it, Analyze the Dharma that you have heard, Be skilled in analysis. Listen! Even if accumulated in small amounts, it will surely, before long, become many. Always, a stream of single drops of water, falling without interruption, what kind of vessel is there that would not be filled by it? Like this clear example, King, take it as a measure, and in listening to the holy Dharma, always be delighted. Treasure the wealth of qualities like relatives, be wise and possess compassion. Do not do ungrateful and impoverished deeds, leave these words for the sake of the virtuous you. Those who are foolish and impoverished in virtue, stingy and ungrateful, those who are harsh, violent, and unbearable, do not grant them a place in your land. Always know the differences between each individual, and just by knowing those differences, perfection is achieved. Whoever does what is difficult to do, abandons what is difficult to abandon, endures what is difficult to endure, takes up what is difficult to honor, averts from what is not the place, strives to place in the place, and those whose minds are in harmony, respectful, wishing for happiness, and loving. These are the true friends, relatives, kin, and companions are also these. People who follow only for their own sake, compared to other ordinary people. The words of a friend who wishes to benefit, even if unpleasant, are beneficial, and gentle and pleasant words, please keep them in mind. Sweet words that are not beneficial, and gentle words that are not true, are the words of those who are not holy, do not hold them in your heart.
