A Letter to a Disciple Chandragomin A Letter to a Disciple Chandragomin In Sanskrit: Śrīṣyālekha. In Tibetan: A Letter to a Disciple. Homage to the Three Jewels! Whose actions are extremely difficult and unprecedented, Praised by non-humans and goddesses, Like a lotus grove that resembles a demon's daughter, Now closes as if touched by the rays of the moon. Possessing an auspicious, pleasing, and extremely wondrous body, Difficult for beings with little merit to behold, Fulfilling the hopes of those who desire manifest existence, Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, acting solely for the benefit of others. Who is always happy because of the happiness of others, And extremely saddened by the suffering of others, Whose qualities are greatly enhanced by great compassion, That one dwells having abandoned his own happiness and suffering. Who even cuts off his heads for the sake of others, Yet opens joyful eyes like lotuses and gazes, For his own sake, it is as if he is covered by a single white umbrella, Yet he regards the earth as a sword sharpened to a keen edge. Like the waxing moon, his qualities are fully manifest, Dispelling the darkness of faults, uniquely pleasing, His efforts to benefit the world are exceedingly clear, Like that rising moon in the east, he cools beings. The doctrine is precious, excellent, and without decline, The manner of purity, possessing the majesty of a dragon's head, Is respectfully revered by great beings like a jewel on their crowns, Thus dispelling the dimness that exists on earth. That cloud of Dharma moves for the purpose of accomplishing benefit, The nectar of Dharma is the supreme cause of peaceful nirvana, Uniquely dispelling suffering, it falls like rain, But it depends on the vessel, and thus the flavors become diverse. For those vessels that are vast, deep, stainless, and clear, And who possess mindfulness and can endure all burdens, All beings should draw near and rely upon them, for they dwell therein. I pay homage to that great ocean in human form! Who does not obtain, does not enjoy, and does not hold onto the nectar that dispels birth, old age, sickness, and death, Those are defiled by many faults and thick ignorance, Like one afflicted with a long illness who does not rely on a great physician. The one stainless eye of all beings, That is...

The common lamp of the three learnings, Having found the teachings well, whoever abandons them, Is simply tormented by extremely wonderful ignorance. Like a staircase on the path to the excellent mansion of enlightenment, Those who rely on the established foundations, By following them, will reach the highest position, While those who turn away will fall to their original ground. Who would abandon the ship of morality that comes to hand, wishing to cross the ocean of birth, which is so difficult to cross? Separated from the noble captain, or not knowing the way, Why would one wander in the wilderness and suffer for a long time? Having fallen into the abyss in the midst of the mountains of samsara, Whoever strives to rise from the thick darkness, Abandoning the garland of virtuous reeds in between, Those will surely fall into a forceful and dreadful fall. Whoever carefully examines even one thing with their mind, And walks together with the correct path, That one is the noble one who has become the chief in the center of the earth, That excellent disciple will be revered as a lama. Modesty, the mother who gathers the assembly of qualities, the virtuous woman, Following the supremely unwavering love, those who delight in truth and scriptures, Possessing glory, they would readily give up their lives, but not their vows. For a while, everyone is burdened by sins and misdeeds, Not to mention the unbearable hell for all beings, Having lost their true nature, the suffering of being reviled, What other suffering is there on earth that is worse than this for the wise? Whoever finds and then abandons the path of Dharma established by the Buddhas, Which is like a vast ship, For those who are like dancers swirling in the ocean of samsara, I think that joy has surely deceived their minds. Whoever enters into the wheel of samsara, which is constantly turning, And thinks that just resting there is happiness, That one will surely, involuntarily, gradually in hundreds of thousands, Wander everywhere among beings, equal and unequal. Extremely unbearable, foul-smelling, defiled by impurity, A person sitting in the thick darkness of great fear, Having entered into a womb-like hell, Having shrunk the whole body, one must endure great suffering. That is like gradually pressing sesame oil with a hard tool, Having done the pressing, what will happen then?
