The Letter to a Friend by Nagarjuna. The Letter to a Friend. Nagarjuna. In Indian language: Suhrllekha. In Tibetan: The Letter to a Friend. Homage to youthful Manjushri! I, who possess qualities, nature, and virtue, have composed this excellent verse, born from the words of the Sugata, for the sake of merit, may you listen. Just as the body of the Sugata, even if made of wood, is worshiped by the wise, no matter how it is made. Likewise, even though my poetry is poor, it should not be disparaged because it relies on speaking the Dharma. The teachings of the Great Sage are like nine medicines, and even if you look at them in your heart, they are sufficient, but why should you not make the light of the moon, made of limestone, even whiter? The Victorious One has taught the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as generosity, ethics, and the six recollections of the gods. You should recollect them individually with their collections of qualities. The ten paths of virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind should be constantly practiced, and you should refrain from all intoxicants, and likewise, you should rejoice in a virtuous livelihood. Knowing that enjoyment is fleeting and without essence, you should give generously to monks, Brahmins, the poor, and friends. There is no better friend than generosity. Your ethics should not be diminished, nor should they be inferior, you should practice ethics that are unmixed and undefiled. Just as the earth is the seed of all plants, ethics are said to be the foundation of all qualities. Increase generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and immeasurable wisdom, the perfections. Become the master of the Victorious Ones, crossing to the other shore of the ocean of existence. The family that worships their father and mother possesses Brahma and a teacher. Worshipping them will bring fame, and in the future, they will be born in the heavens. Abandon killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, as well as drinking alcohol, eating at improper times, delighting in high and large beds, singing, dancing, and the distinctions of garlands. If you possess these eight limbs, following the ethics of an Arhat, fasting will grant men and women a desirable heavenly body.

Do. Stinginess, hypocrisy, attachment, and laziness, as well as manifest pride, desire, hatred, and also arrogance arising from lineage, appearance, learning, youth, and great power, regard them as enemies. Mindfulness is the place of nectar, while heedlessness is the place of death, so taught the Thuba (Buddha). Therefore, in order to increase your virtuous Dharma, always respectfully maintain mindfulness. If someone was previously heedless, but later becomes mindful, they become as beautiful as the moon free from clouds, like Joyful, Angulimala, One with Sight, and Well-Protected. Thus, there is no asceticism equal to patience, do not give anger a chance. By abandoning anger, one will attain non-regression, this is the promise of the Buddha. "He reviled me, he struck me, he defeated me, he stole my wealth," those who harbor resentment will stir up strife, by completely abandoning resentment, one sleeps in peace. Understand sentient beings to be like drawings on water, earth, and stone. Among them, for those with afflictions, the first is supreme, for those who desire Dharma, the last is supreme. The Victorious One taught three kinds of speech: pleasing, truthful, and false, abandon the last one among them. From light to the end of light, from darkness to the end of darkness, from light to the end of darkness, from darkness to the end of light, that person is the basis, become the nature of those beings. People are like unripe mangoes, appearing ripe, ripe ones appearing unripe, unripe ones appearing unripe, ripe ones appearing ripe, understand it to be like that. Do not look at another's wife, even if you see her, for those of similar age, generate the thought of mother, daughter, or sister, if attachment arises, contemplate impurity as it is. The wavering mind is like a son who has heard (the Dharma), protect it like treasure, like life itself, generate aversion to the pleasure of malice, poison, weapons, enemies, and desires like fire. Desires are the source of evil, the King of Victors said they are like Kimpa fruits. Abandon them, for with their iron chains, they bind this world in the prison of samsara. Those who have the six senses
