Commentary on the Words of Ethics, Clear Fame. Commentary on the Words of Ethics Clear Fame In Indian language: Śīlākathāvṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Words of Ethics. Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to the one who conquers the demons, perfects the six perfections, and performs the benefit of others with love. Since others are not upright, for the sake of one's own uprightness, following the holy ones, this discipline is explained. Likewise, the general meaning is that among the perfections, ethics is regarded as being like the earth, and in order to prove that it is superior to generosity, it is shown by way of example: "The difference between the ocean and the footprint of an ox, whatever the difference is, the difference between generosity and ethics, that is how it is." This is stated by this. "Is" means to be grasped with certainty. "That" refers to what has just passed. "Is so" means the completion of speech, it is merely understanding. In order to show it extensively through the door of ethics, "Whoever" and so on are mentioned. If asked how it appears, the answer is: through scripture and reasoning. Among them, the scripture comes from the "Moon Lamp Sutra": "For billions of kalpas, to as many Buddhas as there are sands in the Ganges, with umbrellas and banners, garlands of lamps, and with food and drink, with faith, having made offerings, whoever, when the holy Dharma is destroyed, prevents the teachings of the Tathagata from being destroyed, holding one precept for one day, this merit is superior to that." For details, see the sutra itself. Furthermore, the fruit of ethics is higher realms, and the fruit of generosity is wealth, and if the cause is reversed, even if one possesses the other, beings in the lower realms can still serve as a basis for accumulating merit, this is how it is thought. "Whoever with a mind of faith," is through the means of trusting a person, and so on. "Giving alms for a hundred years," this is a symbol, meaning even if one strives for a long time. "Whoever keeps the precepts for one day," this is a measure, it is not that the time is equal, but that even just one day, this must be grasped with certainty. Protecting is more excellent than that.

Gha. This is called guarding, striving, or specially managing. Whatever has these is called that. Now it is better or more excellent than that, meaning not the same. Furthermore, it is for the teacher to explain that reason. Giving to butchers, etc., these and so on are mentioned. The word "etc." means many, and it refers to all people such as butchers, fishermen, and merchants. "Even those of bad lineage give," meaning that even those Chandalas who have become the lowest in the world give alms without discipline. "Whoever with discipline," means that even those strong people who subdue their body, speech, and mind and have the power to counteract, what more to say about others? "Cannot fully protect," therefore, discipline is particularly excellent, which is the remainder of that statement. If asked how? Even a noble person finds it difficult to achieve a discipline like a precious jewel, free from defilement and unpolluted by fine dust, because there are many obstacles, and how can sentient beings of the degenerate age achieve it? That is what is thought. The word "completely" means that there is no ability to fully understand or thoroughly comprehend in language. To explain the second reason. "Even if giving is very abundant," the meaning of this sentence is that now abiding in giving or enjoying its result is what it means to possess. Or one should regard "giving" as the third case. That is not a great benefactor, these are said, because the body is purified by discipline, so it is like horse ears, etc. Completely purified by discipline, meaning that abiding in discipline in that way and enjoying its result is what it means to possess complete purity. It is called a great benefactor, meaning that it is a great master, because it is abandoned by discipline, so it is like the king of gods, etc. If so, then is one who possesses giving not a benefactor? Then, how can those who do not have discipline but have the ground of giving be called benefactors in the sutras? That is merely a benefactor, but not a great benefactor.
