The Precious Garland of Advice to a King by Nagarjuna. The Precious Garland of Advice to a King, by Nagarjuna. In Sanskrit: Rājaparikathāratnamālī. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! He who is completely liberated from all faults, He who is adorned with all virtues, The sole friend of all sentient beings, I pay homage to the All-Knowing One. King, for the sake of your practice of Dharma, I will explain the one and only virtuous Dharma, For the vessel of the Holy Dharma, The Dharma will be accomplished. First, the Dharma of higher realms, Later, from this, definite goodness arises, Because after obtaining higher realms, Gradually, definite goodness will come. Therefore, higher realms are happiness, Definite goodness is considered liberation, If their practice is briefly summarized, In short, it is faith and wisdom. Because one has faith, one relies on the Dharma, Because one has wisdom, one knows reality. Of these two, wisdom is the main one, Faith is its precursor. If one is not swayed by desire, hatred, fear, and ignorance and does not violate the Dharma, Then he is called a faithful person, He is the supreme vessel of definite goodness. If one's actions of body, speech, and mind, are all well examined, Knowing the benefit of oneself and others, And always acts accordingly, he is wise. Abstaining from killing and stealing, Abstaining from adultery with another's wife, Abstaining from lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, And meaningless idle talk. For those without attachment and harmful intent, Completely abandoning one's own wrong views. These are the ten paths of white deeds, The opposite are black deeds. Not drinking alcohol and living well, Not harming others and giving with respect, Offering to those worthy of offerings and loving-kindness, In short, the Dharma is these. Merely tormenting the body, There is no Dharma, because in this way, One cannot avoid harming others, Nor can one benefit others. Giving, discipline, patience, and clarity, For the great path of the Holy Dharma, Disrespectful torment of the body is like a black path, Those who walk from the wrong path, In the wilderness of samsara, In the endless forest of sentient beings, The body entwined by the poisonous snakes of afflictions, Will exist for a very long time. Killing will lead to a short life, Harming others will lead to much harm, Stealing will lead to a lack of wealth.
