Explanation of the Eighth Precept of a Layperson, by Sunaśrī. Explanation of the Eighth Precept of a Layperson. Sunaśrī. In Sanskrit: Upasaka Samvara Ashtakam Vivaranam. In Tibetan: Explanation of the Eighth Precept of a Layperson. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Having crossed to the other shore of the ocean of the three trainings, having paid homage to the Sugata, abiding in the state of the five precepts, I shall clearly explain the objects to be abandoned. Here, there are definitely three types of individuals: some practice detachment from improper indulgence in desires, some practice detachment merely from indulgence in desires, and some practice detachment merely from improper conduct. This is because they are accustomed to it. It is impossible to practice detachment merely from desires that are difficult to abandon and to engage in wrongdoing, and it is not impossible to practice detachment merely from wrongdoing in training and to engage merely in desires. For example, one who is skilled at cutting very hard wood is seen as lazy when cutting the petals of a very soft blue lotus, and the cub of a lion who goes to fight a herd of mad elephants is not afraid of arguing with deer and others who are frightened merely by the movement of branches and so on moved by the force of the wind. Others have not trained in either detachment. Among these, with regard to the first type of person, it includes ordination and full ordination. Starting with the second, the five-membered layperson's precepts are properly explained. As for the third, the observance of the fast is mentioned. Among these, the first two precepts are understood to be immediately understood as being under the control of discipline. The remaining ones should again be stated from within the two precepts, the ritual for taking the layperson's precepts, that is, from a learned master of vows, after taking refuge in the Three Jewels, until the end of life, abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and drinking alcohol, in accordance with the ritual with complete limbs. The so-called "holder of vows" refers to those who are learning the layperson's precepts, not others, because they are not independent. With the lama at the head, without despising. Looking at it this way, even if the Sangha is complete, it is still a place of learning.

Because I will not disappear. From the wise, that is, from the wise who are skilled in fully bestowing vows. Not from others, because vows cannot be obtained if the ritual is missing. "Taking" means taking vows. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels means taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Taking refuge is shown first because it is the gateway to receiving all vows. As long as life lasts is the end of being alive, because here, taking it correctly is as long as life lasts. Killing is truly thinking, "This should be killed," and killing him, because the mind thought of it beforehand, and he was not mistaken for someone else, because he is a person. In this way, understand the same for what follows. In the presence of the owner, whether relying on him or concealing it, taking another's property is stealing. Wrong conduct is wrong conduct with desire, which is representing the whole with a part, for example, the true Brahmin (Sanskrit Devanagari: ब्राह्मण, Sanskrit Romanization: brāhmaṇa, Literal Chinese meaning: Brahmin) is a Brahmin. There are also four types: going where one should not go, going to limbs that are not appropriate, going to places that are not appropriate, and going at times that are not appropriate. These are not mentioned here because they are numerous and feared. False speech is other things. The emergence of things that create intoxication, such as alcohol, is an alcoholic beverage. Turning away from what has just been said is what should be turned away from. What are the factors by which one can fully obtain the vows of a layperson? They are those. The factors are temporarily faith, and for those without faith, white dharmas do not arise. For example, it is explained with the words, "Like seeds burned by fire, there will be no sprouts or shoots." The female and male sexual organs are also complete, and the five heinous crimes, etc., are also abandoned. According to the ritual means not exceeding the ritual. For this, this is the ritual: one who desires the vows of a layperson prostrates at the feet of the lama and prays, saying, "Please, son of good family or monk, grant me the vows of a layperson." Then, drape the upper garment to one side, sit squatting, or kneel with the right knee on the ground, join the palms, and then repeat what he says, and you will be able to take it correctly. Like this, I, named
