A Word-by-Word Commentary on the Praise of the Vinaya, The God of the Vinaya. A Word-by-Word Commentary on the Praise of the Vinaya. The God of the Vinaya. In Sanskrit: Bina-ya-stotra-pada-vyakhyana. In Tibetan: A Word-by-Word Commentary on the Praise of the Vinaya. Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to the Sage who is free from all existence! Those who wish to explain in detail, those who are endowed with the mind to discern, may they generate faith in the qualities of the object of praise, and attain peace through correct explanation. In order to generate respect for a student who wishes to diligently apply themselves to the Vinaya, the first thing to do is to praise the Vinaya by explaining its qualities. Born into the lineage of kings who are tamed, who tame disciples, who are extremely skilled at taming faults, I pay homage to the Lord of the Vinaya, the Buddha, and will briefly speak of the praises of the Vinaya. And so forth, it was composed. Therein, the qualities of the Vinaya should be spoken of. By realizing this, there is a need to respect the Vinaya. This respect is also generated by this praise. The method and the way it arises from the method are related. If one enters the Vinaya with respect, then the precepts will be completely purified, and by meditating on the Noble Path, one will attain Nirvana, which is the most important of all needs. Therein, the so-called Vinaya refers to those who abide in their own doctrine. The so-called king refers to the lord of men. Since they are both tamed and kings, they are called tamed kings. The lord of these, the king, is the lord who is revered by many, such as the Chakravartin. The lineage of these refers to the unbroken lineage, the Shakya lineage of the kings who are tamed. The so-called birth refers to being born, descending for the sake of the Vinaya, and being born into the lineage of the kings who are tamed. Connect "I pay homage to the one who was born into the lineage of the kings who are tamed" to it, who is that? Connect it to the appearance of the Buddha below. How is he a Buddha? In order to show a name that matches the meaning, he spoke of "taming disciples, extremely skilled at taming faults." Who causes the disciples to be superior in all things, especially surpassing Nirv

That which initially leads is called taming disciples. In whose continuum, the stains of habitual practice, with the stains of maturation causing faults, the faults such as desire are completely pacified, and in whose own continuum, even the habitual tendencies have been removed, that is called the one who has thoroughly subdued faults. To such a one, I prostrate. This should be connected in this way, not to everyone. Among them, just the term "one who has thoroughly subdued faults" itself non-commonly shows the abandonment of afflictions together with their habitual tendencies, because it is free from all the sleep of ignorance. It shows the perfect benefit for the Buddha himself and for oneself and others. Just the term "taming disciples" shows that because one necessarily understands all things, it shows the perfect benefit for the Buddha himself and for others. Like this, if one is not omniscient, one cannot accomplish all the meanings of taming as they are by oneself. Therefore, the meanings related to this are those that comprehend all aspects. Like this, who possesses the perfect benefit for oneself and the perfect benefit for others? Therefore, the Buddha is spoken of, because one necessarily understands all meanings, or because one is free from the sleep of afflictions together with their habitual tendencies. The Bhagavan is called the Buddha, and one should prostrate to him. Then, after prostrating to him, what should one say? Below it says that one should slightly praise taming, so one should praise. Then, when one is about to praise the praise of self-mastered taming, why does one praise taming after prostrating to the Buddha Bhagavan? Therefore, the "lord of taming" is spoken of, like this, the Buddha Bhagavan is the lord of this taming, because he is the one who enters. Therefore, one should prostrate to him and then praise taming. This shows the teacher, and thus causes disciples who have faith in taming to arise by following. Thus, born into the lineage of gentle kings, taming the disciples, the Buddha who has thoroughly subdued faults tames.
