The Activities of the Sarvāstivāda Śrāmaṇera The Activities of the Sarvāstivāda Śrāmaṇera In Sanskrit: Sarva asti vādi śrāmaṇerakaraṇa. In Tibetan: The Activities of the Sarvāstivāda Śrāmaṇera. The term "Sarvāstivāda" refers to those who believe that the three times, non-manifest form, the four unconditioned phenomena, the twelve colors, the eight shapes, and so on, exist as substances; and who view them as such even in the ultimate sense, hence they are called Sarvāstivāda. The term "of" refers to the Śrāmaṇeras of the past who have passed away, the Śrāmaṇeras of the present who have arisen, and the Śrāmaṇeras of the future who will arise, and because it is their activities, it is called "of." The term "Śrāmaṇera" means to make effort. Because one becomes tired and weary from recitation and so on; in essence, it refers to relying on virtue or practicing virtue, and is called Śrāmaṇera, which will be explained in detail below. The term "activities" refers to two aspects: what is to be accomplished and what is to be protected. Among these, what is to be accomplished is unsurpassed Bodhi. What is to be protected is discipline, that is, what is to be learned. Alternatively, it refers to becoming a Śrāmaṇera, or how a Śrāmaṇera should act. The term "Protector" refers to the Buddha, because he is the protector, refuge, and companion of all sentient beings, hence he is called Protector. The term "all" refers to external and internal causes and conditions, the three times, kalpas in terms of time, kalpas in terms of nature, and so on. The term "knowing" refers to constantly thinking of beings with wisdom that is free from obstruction and attachment, and knowing all knowable things without exception. The term "Dharma" refers to the three baskets of the Hearers, wherein the Vinaya tames, the Sutra pacifies, and the Abhidharma leads to liberation from suffering, hence it is called Dharma. Alternatively, it does not merely refer to letters, but to the path of liberation from suffering, which is the Dharma of selflessness for the individual. The term "Noble" refers to being far removed from the afflictions of the three realms, or being called Noble because of being distanced. The term "Sangha" refers to, what is that? It refers to those who have exhausted defilements, abandoned burdens, the Arhats, that is, the Sangha of the four pairs and eight individuals, referring to their assembly.

I am now the Sangha of four or more. Among them, outflows are desire outflow, ignorance outflow, view outflow, and existence outflow. The burden relinquished is the relinquishment of the burden of the five aggregates. Arhat is the Arhat who has cut off karma and afflictions, or the Arhat who has cut off self-grasping. Prostration is to pay homage to the Three Jewels with body, speech, and mind. Among them, to prostrate with the body is to touch the ground with five parts of the lower body. To prostrate with speech is to declare and praise the virtues of the Three Jewels. To prostrate with the mind is to single-mindedly visualize the Buddhas as truly abiding. Among them, a seriously ill person should do it with limbs. A sick person should do it with two limbs. A healthy person should do it with all three limbs. Virtue is the virtue done through the three doors of body, speech, and mind. Among them, the virtue done through the door of the body is: abandoning killing, not taking what is not given, and non-celibacy. The virtuous deeds of speech are: abandoning lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle talk. The virtuous deeds of the mind are: abandoning wrong views, malice, and attachment. Alternatively, the virtuous deeds of the body are the four dignified postures, the virtuous deeds of speech are not speaking meaningless words, speaking at the right time, and the virtuous deeds of the mind are remembering the Three Jewels and possessing the four immeasurables. Discipline refers to the four Samana disciplines. Rituals refer to the ten precepts and the rituals of novices, etc. Briefly speaking, in the hundred thousand verses of the Vinaya Pitaka, there are two hundred and fifty Bhikkhu precepts. Those that the novices do not protect are only the thirteen Sanghavasesa, but not all are Sanghavasesa, because only the root and branches are collected, so it is called briefly. To say definitely, it is not that the Khenpo made it up himself, but it was collected from the teachings of the scriptures, from the Vinaya Pitaka, so it is called definite. To be explained means teaching and explaining, and speaking, these are different names. Or, like that, prostration, vows, and showing like a key point. Sakya means that this is also what the teachers vowed first. What is it? The householder lineage is completely pure, and the renunciate lineage is completely pure in wisdom.
