Are you not a Krolwa? Are you not a Lhamakhen? Are you not a Dowa? Are you not a Yungpo? Are you not a non-human being? Is your voice not the unpleasant sound of the north? Is your name not one that has become three? Are you not a woman who resembles a man? Do you not have characteristics like a "sdig sdig"? Are you not one who was born in another continent and has a different appearance? Thus, one should ask. If they say yes, then one should say, "Then go away." If they say no, then one should seize them. Having seized them, one should administer the vows of a layperson by having them take refuge in the Three Jewels and vow to be a layperson. One should administer them in this way: First, have them prostrate to the Teacher. After that, have them prostrate to the Abbot, and have them sit squatting in front. Have them join their palms, and have them say these words: "Venerable ones, please listen. I, who am called so-and-so, from this time forth until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the best of bipeds. I take refuge in the Dharma, the best of those free from desire. I take refuge in the Sangha, the best of assemblies. Please, venerable ones, accept me as a layperson for as long as I live." In that way, repeat it twice, three times. On the third repetition, one should say "by the Abbot." The Abbot should say, "It is the method." The layperson should say, "Excellent." This is the administering of the vows of a layperson. After that, one should state the precepts in the manner of taking a vow. One should do it like this: "Venerable Abbot, please listen. Just as those noble Arhats, until the end of their lives, abandoned killing and turned away from killing, so too, I, who am called so-and-so, from this time forth until the end of my life, abandon killing and turn away from killing. With this first branch, I will train in accordance with the precepts of those noble Arhats. I will practice accordingly. I will act accordingly. Furthermore, just as those noble Arhats, until the end of their lives, abandoned taking what is not given, and sexual misconduct, and lying, and drinking grain alcohol and concocted alcohol,

Just as one abandons the place of heedlessness that leads to intoxication, just as one returns from the place of heedlessness that leads to intoxication. Likewise, I, who am called by this name, from this time forth, until the end of my life, will abandon taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, false speech, abandoning the place of heedlessness that leads to intoxication, I will return from the place of heedlessness that leads to intoxication. With this fifth branch, I will follow the training of those noble Arhats. I will practice. I will do. The teacher should say, "It is a means." The layperson should say, "Good." The ceremony of becoming a lay devotee is complete. After that, it should be entrusted to a monk who will make the request. The requesting monk should ask the abbot, "Have you asked about the obstructive dharmas?" If the request is made without asking, it will become a serious offense. After that, the requesting monk should make the request. The request should be made in this way: having prepared the place, struck the ghanta, and truly informed the monks with the words of inquiry, whether the entire Sangha is assembled and in harmony, or whether they are dwelling in their respective dwellings, the elders should be made to pay homage, and about ten people should be made to sit squatting, with their palms joined, and then the request should be made, saying this: Venerable Sangha, please listen. This person, named so-and-so, desires to be ordained by the abbot, named so-and-so. He desires to be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya, having left the white-clothed householder, whose hair and beard have not been shaved. This person, named so-and-so, desires to be ordained, having shaved his hair and beard, and wearing the robes of a renunciant. With faith in the truth alone, from home to homelessness, he is ordained by the abbot, named so-and-so. If he is completely purified of the obstructive dharmas, should he be ordained? All of them should say, "If he is completely purified." If they say so, it is good. If they do not say so, it is a serious offense.

It is done. That is the request of one who wishes to renounce. After that, one should request the Khenpo. One should request in this way: have him prostrate to the Khenpo, then have him squat in front of him, have him join his palms, and then have him say this: Teacher, please listen. I, named so-and-so, request you, teacher, to be my Khenpo. Please, teacher, be my Khenpo. Please, teacher Khenpo, let me renounce. Repeat this two or three times in the same way. In the third sentence, say "Khenpo." The Khenpo should say, "It is possible." The one who wishes to renounce should say, "Good." That is the request to the Khenpo. After that, one should entrust it to the monk who will shave his hair and beard, and he should shave his hair and beard except for the topknot. After that, one should ask, "Shall I shave the topknot?" If he says, "Do not shave," then say, "Then go." If he says, "Shave," then shave it. After that, have him take a bath. If it is a cold time, have him take a bath with warm water. If it is a hot time, have him take a bath with cold water. After that, the Khenpo should give him a begging bowl and robes. He should also receive them with both feet on the ground. After that, the Khenpo should have him put on the robes. When putting on the lower garment, one should examine his sexual organs to see if he is asexual, bisexual, or not a eunuch. That is the first thing to do. After that, by beginning to take refuge, one should accomplish the ordination. One should accomplish it in this way: first, have him prostrate to the teacher. After that, have him prostrate to the Khenpo, then have him squat in front of him, have him join his palms, and then have him say this: Khenpo, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the best of the two-legged beings. I take refuge in the Dharma, the best of those who are free from desire. I take refuge in the Sangha, the best of the assemblies.
