The Quintessential Instructions on the Ornament of the Middle Way. Peaceful, the Source of Jewels. The Quintessential Instructions on the Ornament of the Middle Way. Peaceful, the Source of Jewels. In Sanskrit: Madhyama Alankara Upadesha. In Tibetan: The Quintessential Instructions on the Ornament of the Middle Way. Homage to the Noble Tara! Whose realm of two bodies pervades, Like the sun, moon, planets, and stars. Whose form is of great bliss itself, I constantly bow to Vajradhara. Spoken by Maitreya Asanga, And also accepted by Nagarjuna, With valid reasoning and scripture, Here, the two truths shall be explained. The two truths are the ultimate truth and the conventional truth. The ultimate truth also has three aspects: The ultimate truth is suchness. The ultimate truth of accomplishment is pristine awareness. The ultimate truth to be attained is nirvana. As it is said: Meaning, attainment, and accomplishment, The ultimate truth is considered threefold. As it is explained. The conventional truth also has three aspects: The imputed conventional truth is the nature of all phenomena imputed. The known conventional truth is all mistaken knowledge. The expressed conventional truth is that which reveals the ultimate truth through sound and conceptual thought. As it is said: Imputation and knowledge, Likewise, expression is vast. As it is explained. The expressed conventional truth is neither conceptual thought nor non-conceptual thought. Why is it not conceptual thought? Because it generates and accords with non-conceptual thought. Why is it not non-conceptual thought? Because it conceptually thinks about the true meaning. However, non-conceptual thought does not arise from non-conceptual thought, because children do not have it. It also does not arise from the conceptual thought of ordinary people, because that is its opposite. However, non-conceptual thought is not unborn, because the various conceptual thoughts that follow the meditation of it by the mind in equipoise, without effort, the mind will be equally placed in the unelaborated realm of phenomena. That unelaborated one is called non-conceptual wisdom. As it is also said: From the dharani of non-conceptual thought, it is followed by practicing it correctly. Followed by meditation.

Increase! By doing more, you follow! By correctly attending, you follow! Thus it is said. And from other places as well: By familiarizing oneself with the wisdom that is the nature of thought, one will directly realize the ultimate wisdom that is free from delusion, immaculate, and indestructible. Therefore, for those who wish to realize the non-conceptual Bodhi, correct individual observation is what should be relied upon and cultivated; this is the definitive conclusion. Furthermore, what is the ultimate truth? It is because it is the realm of the noble ones. What is the conventional truth? It is because it is the realm of ordinary people. Because it is the realm of supreme wisdom, because it is the fruit of supreme wisdom, and because it exists ultimately, these three ultimate truths are established in order. The imputed, the dependent, and the perfectly established: the characteristics of these three types of conventional truth are also in order. Therefore, it itself is the Madhyamaka of the three natures, which is: the nature of duality is completely absent, there is the nature of being mistaken as two, that is the nature of emptiness, and that is how the Madhyamaka path is regarded. It is also said: The imputed and the dependent, and these perfectly established ones, are respectively the imputed and born from causes, and unchanging, therefore they are in order. Therefore, here, their characteristics will be briefly stated: Because the characteristics of these two do not exist as they are, it is the nature of the imputed. That is, the two, the grasper and the grasped. Although non-dual, it arises appearing as two due to the power of habit. That is dependent on causes and conditions, therefore it is the nature of the dependent. Or, the so-called "other" refers to aspects. Correct wisdom is the other shore, it is not dependent on others. The dependent also has three aspects: the alaya-vijñana, the afflicted mind, and the transforming consciousness. Because it is the basis of the seeds of all completely defiled dharmas, it is the alaya, and because it closely focuses on its own nature, it is the vijñana. Because it is constantly associated with the four afflictions, it is the afflicted mind, and it thinks "I" is.
