Commentary on the Twenty Verses on Vows Shantarakshita Commentary on the Twenty Verses on Vows Shantarakshita In Sanskrit: Samvara Vimsika Vrtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Twenty Verses on Vows, Volume One. All vows are like the ocean, Perfectly possessing peaceful speech. Having prostrated, the best of vows, The twenty verses will be clearly explained. To the Buddha and his retinue, Respectfully prostrate and offer as much as possible. Those who abide in all directions and times, The discipline of the Bodhisattvas. Which is the treasure of all merits, That is the supreme intention. One should take vows from a master who abides in and is skilled in vows, And who is capable. This verse shows the ritual for taking the Bodhisattva vows. Because it is said so in the Bodhisattva grounds. Among them, whether a Bodhisattva is a householder or an ordained person, if they wish to study the Bodhisattva's trainings, which are the three aggregates of moral discipline, and have made aspirations to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, because they have generated the aspiration of a Bodhisattva, they are skilled in taking vows that are in accordance with the Dharma. Being able to grasp the meaning of linguistic expressions and being able to understand, such a Bodhisattva should first prostrate at their feet and then make a request, saying: "I, son of good family, wish to properly take and receive the vows of the Bodhisattva's moral discipline from you. If it is possible to receive them, please listen to me for a moment and grant them to me out of compassion." Then, the capable Bodhisattva should extensively explain the benefits of the Bodhisattva vows to the one who desires to take them, and should also truthfully explain the heavy and light precepts of the foundation of training for the one who desires to take the vows, and should also make them happy. One should also say: "Son of good family, listen. Do you wish to liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated, to free those who have not been freed, to give breath to those who have not breathed, to completely liberate those who have not been completely liberated from suffering, and to not let the lineage of the Buddha be cut off? For this, you should strengthen your Bodhicitta and you must keep your vows." Like this, seeing those who do not understand, one should make them happy.

Therefore, it should be declared. Then, after the aspirant has prayed well, draping the upper garment over one shoulder, make offerings to all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have appeared in the past, present, and future, and to all the Bodhisattvas who have entered the great earth, who have attained wisdom and great power, and who reside in the ten directions. And also manifest their qualities, and generate a joyful mind from the heart. Or, according to one's ability and whatever strength one has, create even a small offering. Place the image of the Thus-Gone One in front, and make offerings well. In a sorrowful manner, either kneel with both knees on the ground or sit squatting. To that learned Bodhisattva, one should say this: 'Son of good family, long-lived one, or monk, please grant me the vows of a Bodhisattva.' After saying this, focus one's mindfulness, and generate only a joyful mind. 'Now I will soon obtain a great treasure of merit that is unsurpassed, inexhaustible, immeasurable.' Thinking this in one's heart, silently contemplate that meaning, and do not speak. To that Bodhisattva who has entered in this way, the learned Bodhisattva may stand or sit on a seat. Without distraction, he should say this: 'Son of good family or Dharma brother, named so-and-so, are you a Bodhisattva? Have you made aspirations for Bodhicitta?' Ask this. And he should answer, 'Yes.' After that, say to him again: 'Son of good family, named so-and-so, what is the basis of learning for all the Bodhisattvas of the past, and what is their discipline; what is the basis of learning for all the Bodhisattvas of the future, and what is their discipline; what is the basis of learning for all the Bodhisattvas who now reside in the ten directions, and what is their discipline; what are the basis and discipline that all the Bodhisattvas of the past have learned, and all the Bodhisattvas of the future
