And its seed will grow. If one gradually gains entry in this way, then bearing fruit at the right time will be successful. The color applied to the cuckoo flower is like its blood red. Thus it is said. That very thing is said in the Mahayana Sutra called "The Explanation of the Thought of the Blessed One": The consciousness of taking is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river. It is not permissible to grasp at self, I have not shown this reason to children. Thus it is said. Moreover, in those who connect to rebirth again, it is called the consciousness of taking because it takes near to the body. Because it is the basis of the seeds of all dharmas, it is called the alaya consciousness. Because it is the maturation of the karma of previous lives, it is called the maturation consciousness. If one does not want that either, then what will hold the body? Other than that consciousness, there is nothing that does not abandon the body or pervades the body until death. The habitual tendencies of afflictions are eliminated by the antidote of what they rely on. If it is said that the antidote is the nature of mind itself, then how can that which is related to the habitual tendencies of afflictions become its antidote? For those born in the formless realm, those with afflictions and those with virtue, and those with a stream of uncontaminated mind, what substance of maturation is included by their going, that body becomes a non-maturational going, and also becomes non-associated. For those who do not come from the peak of existence, those who exhaust the defilements, when the uncontaminated mind of the sphere of nothingness manifests, by what means will they be said to not transmigrate from there after death? What other substance of the body of those at the peak of existence is similar to the category of the body? Or is there any other substance of the root of life? There is nothing at all. It is attached to that only by the similarity and projection of the maturation aggregate. There is no other substance of similarity or projection, just like the similarity and projection of sprouts such as rice. Therefore, without a doubt, one must accept the other consciousness as described above. That is, the monks of the Red Robe sect establish it as the consciousness of the limb of existence. Others establish it as the root consciousness.

So it is said. Well, what is its object and aspect? The object and aspect are uninterrupted. If it is said that it is both consciousness and similar to it, what does it mean? This is also the same as other schools that say that there is consciousness in the state of cessation meditation and so on. Then, to which clinging aggregate does it belong? In reality, it belongs to the clinging aggregate of consciousness. Then, what is the clinging aggregate of consciousness? It is the six groups of consciousness. Similarly, in "with consciousness as condition, name and form," if one asks, "How should the phrase 'the six groups of consciousness' be understood?" It should be understood as having a hidden meaning. For example, "What is the feeling aggregate? It is the six kinds of thought," like this, it is not that other dharmas are not included in it. What is the hidden meaning here? For the time being, the Blessed One said in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "If one clings to it as self, it is not permissible; I have not taught it to children." Why would one cling to it in that way? Because its aspect does not change until the end of samsara. Because the basis, object, aspect, and difference are fully understood, it is coarse. And because it exists similarly with afflictions and their antidotes, it is the establishment of being both completely defiled and purified. And with what result is its seed consciousness inferred, that alone is the consciousness taught here, not the consciousness of the cause. Because it is the opposite of that, this is the hidden meaning here. This also reasonably explains how the six groups of consciousness of the limb of existence are explained. From the reasoning of analysis, all the sutras do not exist now, it has been established. Therefore, it is not that the sutras do not fully explain, it is not that the ālaya-vijñāna should not be acknowledged. Then, if that is the case, will the continuum of consciousness, the vipāka-vijñāna, and the other two arise simultaneously? If that is the case, what is the fault?

If it is said that for each body with two streams of consciousness, two sentient beings would be simultaneously designated, like the two streams of consciousness of another body, it is not so. This is because the two exist in a way that the entities of cause and effect are not different, and because the ripening stream of consciousness is also completely influenced by the other. For the two streams of consciousness of another body, there is not that nature either, so there is no fault. Do some see the seed and the stream with the seed as different? Like seeing the root of a blue lotus and the blue lotus, etc., the root and the one with the root, etc. If they see it, fine, and if they don't see it, fine. If you don't accept it that way, you will fall into the faults mentioned earlier, so you must undoubtedly accept it. Then, why not accept the nature of the body as the basis of the six consciousnesses? How should it be accepted? If it is like the alaya consciousness, following the constant, changing due to conditions, then what is the difference between it and the alaya consciousness? If it is one and unchanging, then how can consciousness, etc., imprint habits on it? Habits are what produce differences in ability, like dyeing Madhulunga flowers with pomegranate juice. If there is no difference of complete change, then how, without those habits, from the differences of previous experience and familiarity with knowledge, desire, etc., do differences of memory, knowledge, desire, etc., arise when the time is ripe? If it becomes a state of no-self mind, and if there is no difference in the self, then from where does the consciousness of mind arise later? What do the consciousnesses rely on it for? By what is it understood that I am its basis? If it is said to be produced, if I have not become different, why does it arise in sequence? If it is said to be because it relies on other causes that arise simultaneously, then how is it understood that it has the ability to produce it apart from those? Or if it is said to rely on abiding in it, then what about those that have arisen and do not abide, and those that have not fallen?
