Elements. Why are they called elements? Because they do not act but hold their own characteristics. Why are the aggregates and so on explained? They are antidotes to the three types of self-grasping, explained in order. The three types of self-grasping are grasping as one, grasping as eating, and grasping as acting. Among the eighteen elements, which are with form? Those that are the nature of the form aggregate. Which are without form? The rest. Which are dependent? One form element, which is a place that can be indicated. Which are not indicated? The rest. Which are with obstruction? Ten with form, whatever obstruction there is to whatever. Which are without obstruction? The rest. Which are with outflows? Fifteen and a part of the last three. Because they are the manifest objects of arising afflictions. Which are without outflows? A part of the last three. Which are greatly associated with desire? All of them. Which are greatly associated with form? Fourteen, except for the consciousness of smell, taste, nose, and tongue. Which are greatly associated with the formless? The last three. Which are not associated? A part of the three. Which are included in the aggregates? Except for the unconditioned. Which are included in the aggregates of appropriation? Those that are with outflows. Which are virtuous? Which are non-virtuous? Which are unspecified? Ten are all three types: the seven mind elements, and the form, sound, and dharma elements. The rest are unspecified. Which are internal? Twelve, except for the form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma elements. Which are external? Six, whatever is excluded. Which are with an object? The seven mind elements, and also one aspect of the dharma element, whatever arises from the mind. Which are without an object? The remaining ten, and an aspect of the dharma element. Which are with conceptualization? The mind element, the consciousness element, and an aspect of the dharma element. Which are without conceptualization? The rest. Which are grasped? The five internal ones, and a part of four: form, sound, smell, taste.

Um. It is of the tangibles. What is not included? It is the four directions. What is shown to be the same? It is the five internal forms, because they are the respective consciousnesses and the common object. What is the same as those? Those themselves are empty of self-consciousness, because they are in accordance with their own kind. The Treatise on the Five Aggregates, composed by Master Vasubandhu, is complete. Translated and revised by the Indian Abbot Jinamitra, Śīlendrabodhi, Dānaśīla, and the revising translator, the monk Yeshe De, and others, and finalized. The Treatise on the Five Aggregates.
