Extensive Explanation of the Chapter on the Bodhisattva's Discipline. Son of the Victorious One. Extensive Explanation of the Chapter on the Bodhisattva's Discipline. Son of the Victorious One. The Extensive Explanation of the Chapter on the Bodhisattva's Discipline is presented. Extensive Explanation of the Chapter on the Bodhisattva's Discipline. Homage to youthful Manjushri! In order to show all six perfections in a similar way, all of them are shown by only one summary verse, such as the so-called "essence." It should be understood that only through nine aspects can the perfection of discipline be determined. Determining the nine aspects is just as previously shown, from showing the essence to showing complete purity. The so-called having four qualities is the concluding statement that the essence of the Bodhisattva's discipline is to be determined in four ways. In short, the four qualities can be determined in two ways: giving, as in mentioning "from others" and so on. Holding, which is the remaining words. Again, there are two ways: with intention and action, one word and three words are appropriately combined respectively. Furthermore, this is determined from the perspective of the cause of complete purity of discipline and the result of complete purity of discipline. The cause of complete purity is twofold: having shame, which is for the sake of well guarding in reliance on others, therefore it is mentioned "well and correctly taken from others." Knowing embarrassment, which is for the sake of well guarding in reliance on oneself, therefore it is mentioned "intention is extremely pure." The result of complete purity of discipline is no regret, which is shown by the latter two qualities. Furthermore, it is shown in three ways: the essence of the Bodhisattva's discipline is determined from the perspective of the three disciplines of pure intention. What are the three ways? From the perspective of pure intention, the Bodhisattva speaks the Dharma in order to make his own words credible temporarily, in order to correctly uphold the discipline, and in order to make the ordained Bodhisattva himself become a field of merit.

In order to take pure morality, and when one obtains the lordship of power, in order to not harm sentient beings, one takes pure morality. Therefore, even the praiser says: "How the words are noble, The field of merit for beings, Not doing harm to others, Relies on you, the lord of compassion." Morality is of three kinds: the morality to be taken purely, which is spoken of as taking it well and purely. The morality to be restored is that for which it is said that if it is broken, it is restored. The morality to be guarded is that for which it is said that mindfulness is closely established in order to not break it. Therefore, one should understand that its essence is taught. The essence of morality is learning, and learning is also divided into three aspects as taught. In order to show the benefit of the four qualities, it is said, "Taking pure morality from another," and so on. "When one breaks from learning" means that at the time of breaking, even if there are causes for breaking, one does not break depending on others. A Bodhisattva's intention is extremely pure, even if there are causes for breaking, one does not break depending on oneself. Even if one breaks due to fainting, negligence, forgetfulness, or ignorance, one can restore it, and because one generates respect, one does not break it at all times and places, so morality is completely pure. Because morality is completely pure and there is no breaking, there is no regret and no doubt in the mind. Thus, the first two qualities are the generation of shame and embarrassment. The two, shame and embarrassment, because they strive to protect morality, it is shown that they will become without regret. The first two qualities lead to the latter, in order to show that they are the reality of the proximate cause. Therefore, it is said, "What is it to take pure morality from another," and so on. Furthermore, with three qualities, one makes it not destroyed and not deteriorated.
