Commentary on the Chapter on the Discipline of Bodhisattvas, by Yon tan 'od. Commentary on the Chapter on the Discipline of Bodhisattvas. By Yon tan 'od. Here ends the Commentary on the Chapter on the Discipline of Bodhisattvas. Explanation of the Chapter on the Discipline of Bodhisattvas. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. What is meant by saying that the nature of discipline, endowed with four qualities, should be understood as virtuous? Starting from that, it mentions "benefiting oneself" and so on. Among them, "benefit" means practicing virtue. "Happiness" means being without harm. "Love" means acting in such a way that one cherishes others with virtuous and harmless actions. "Meaning" means seeking meaning and having meaning, which is being without desire and fault. "For the sake of benefit and happiness" means abiding in virtuous conduct and being without harm. "People" refers to royal lineages and so on. For most of them, the appearance of the Buddha, the well-spoken Dharma, and the well-established Sangha are largely beneficial and lead to happiness. They also benefit and bring happiness to themselves, and thus cherish the world. They think, 'How wonderful it would be if they could also have benefit and happiness!' Others also think, 'How wonderful it would be if we could be like that too!' Therefore, it is said, "for the sake of meaning, benefit, and happiness." "Gods and humans" means that they cannot understand and accomplish those meanings. Therefore, the meaning of the words "benefiting oneself" and so on is those. In this regard, one should understand appropriately according to whether one is a householder or a renunciate. The aspect of householders refers to the discipline of a male lay follower and the discipline of a female lay follower. The other is based on the aspect of renunciates. From "relying on the discipline of a Bodhisattva" up to "accomplishing, protecting, and increasing virtuous dharmas," it is done by all three, body, speech, and mind, or by two of them, and should be practiced appropriately. Doing the work of sentient beings.

The eleven types of discipline are essentially three types of beings: ordinary beings, those who have entered, and those who are discordant. Among them, starting with ordinary beings, there are seven types of actions that benefit oneself, and for those who wish to reciprocate help with help, there are three types: those who fear the destruction of the body, those who are in suffering, and those who lack resources. Those who have entered include those who dwell in reliance, others who are in accordance with the Dharma, those who have truly entered, and those who have entered wrongly. The discordant are the lowest of all. For example, it is like treating grass or impure things. There are two types of desires: material desires and afflictive desires. Among them, material desires are for the sake of being desired. Afflictive desires are called desiring for the sake of desire. Here, it refers to material desires. These desires are also of two types: material desires for sexual intercourse and material desires that are not for sexual intercourse. For material desires that are not for sexual intercourse, it is like treating grass. For material desires, it is like treating impure things. "The lowest" means that there are two types, like matter. Not looking at the desires of the Chakravartin, which are the most supreme of all human desires, refers to this life. Not manifestly joyful refers to the future. The future refers to the next life. Even in the future, it refers to the desires that belong to the realm of Mara. Why is it that after making prayers and vows for the sake of these desires, one does not practice celibacy? "Great diversity" and so on are mentioned. Being seen by correct wisdom as being like vomit of food is because both the vomit of food and desires are like having been completely abandoned before. Abiding in the discipline of vows means abiding in the vows of individual liberation, and therefore one is a person with discipline. So, what is a person who is well-guarded in discipline? Even if one has been guarded, one is not well-guarded due to six reasons, and one considers that just that is enough.
