The Noble Gaya Head Mountain Sutra and its Explanation. Shakya's Wisdom. The Noble Gaya Head Mountain Sutra and its Explanation. Shakya's Wisdom. The Noble Gaya Head Mountain Sutra and its Explanation. Volume One. Homage to Manjushri, the Youthful! Diamond Goodness of Selflessness Wisdom! To the one who destroyed the mountain of obscurations! Homage to the Sutra and its Explanation, may they be well explained in conjunction. Wishing to explain the Gaya Head Mountain Sutra, the teacher Vasubandhu, in order to establish the body of the Sutra, first mentioned the so-called "Abridged Sutra" and so on. What is the meaning of "Abridged Sutra"? It is the meaning of condensation, that is the Abridged Sutra. It has nine aspects due to the differences in the basis of discussion and so on. Among them, the basis of discussion is the cause of the Sutra's arising. It is divided into four aspects by the differences in who correctly gathers, the speaker, the place, and the listener. That is, by whom, where, to whom is it explained, and by whom is it later correctly gathered. That is, from "Thus I have heard" to "the great community of monks" is expressed by this. Those who have entered into listening are the listeners. The attainment of their harmonious qualities is the perfection of harmonious listeners. The one-pointed mind focused on Suchness is Samadhi. The one who realizes is the speaker, and its purity is the perfection of uncommon qualities. Who realizes, what is realized, and how to realize is the object to be examined. Arising is arising from Samadhi. Teaching is expressing the meaning of imputation, the conventional truth is well explained. The power of the qualities of a Bodhisattva and the differentiation of conduct are nine aspects. Now, the words of the Sutra will be explained. The sound "Thus" is used for making a vow, requesting "Please teach us the Dharma," which is the request of the retinue to gather correctly, and then vowing "So it is," which is the word of promise, "As you have said, I will do it." It is not done out of desire, because of the words "I have heard" and so on. Also, the sound "Thus" is the meaning of inquiry, it does not change to another meaning.

Saying, "Speak as you have heard," one says, "Thus I have heard," and so on. I have heard it thus, not otherwise. The "I" that I speak of indicates that it was heard directly. "Heard" means apprehended by the ear consciousness. "One time" means at one particular time. "Bhagavan" means because he has conquered the four maras. Or, freedom, well-trained, beautiful form, fame, splendor, and great self-nature assembled, these six are called "good." Because he possesses the goodness of the characteristics of the six meanings, he is called Bhagavan. For example, the Bhagavan's assembly of freedom is because he has cut off the bonds of affliction together with their predispositions. The assembly of well-trained is because he has dispelled the darkness of the obscurations of knowledge with the fire of wisdom. The assembly of form is because he possesses the thirty-two marks of a great being. The assembly of fame is because he pervades all beings. The assembly of splendor is because he has become the near sustenance of all beings. The assembly of great self-nature is because he benefits all sentient beings. Abiding means universally demonstrating abiding with the four conducts, just as in the Vinaya. "Te" means it has become, it is the concluding word saying that he has already abided in Gaya. This shows that the place called Gaya has generally become a stupa. In order to state that this sutra is superior in terms of place, it is said, "At the stupa on the head of Gaya." The word "head" belongs to the synonyms of the top, but the nature is different. The main thing is that mountain is called the head of Gaya. The main thing is because that is the place where the Tathagata dwells. Saying that the place where the Tathagata dwells has become a stupa, the reason for mentioning the stupa is to state that many Buddhas have dwelt there, making this place special. That statement is also in order to conveniently state that this Dharma category has been blessed by many Buddhas. Therefore, the teacher said, "The basis of the discourse is," and so on. One aspect of the basis of the discourse should also be regarded as the basis of the discourse.
