So I think. The so-called "accomplishment" refers to the synonym of calling both the teachings and the subsequent instructions "accomplishment." Its basis lies in residing in a monastery. This is the correct cause for accomplishing calm abiding, insight, and discipline. Living in a city is not, because there are too many trivial matters there. Furthermore, there are four dharmas that are in accordance with the retinue of enlightenment. For the basis of these dharmas, it is called "four." What are these four? They are pursuing meaning itself, knowing the method itself, and accomplishment. Among them, accomplishment is divided into two types: completely maturing sentient beings and completely maturing the Dharma of the Buddha. Among them, the basis of pursuing meaning itself is not abandoning the mind of enlightenment. Those who have abandoned the mind of enlightenment, the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, will not become those who pursue the qualities of the Buddha. The so-called "knowing the method itself" refers to the synonym of knowing the method itself that causes one to attain Buddhahood. Its basis is the virtuous friend, because it is from him that one will hear these. The so-called "accomplishment" is the accomplishment that has been explained above. Among them, accomplishment is divided into two types: completely maturing sentient beings and completely maturing the Dharma of the Buddha. The basis of completely maturing sentient beings is patience and determination. The basis of completely maturing the Dharma of the Buddha is residing in a monastery. For those who do not have patience towards sentient beings who have gone astray, and for those who enjoy noise, they will not be able to accomplish these two types of maturation. Furthermore, there are four dharmas that are in accordance with the retinue of enlightenment. For the basis of these dharmas, it is called "four." What are these four? They are not abandoning samsara, being without all afflictions there, gathering sentient beings, and diligently practicing. Among them, the basis of not abandoning samsara is not abandoning the mind of enlightenment. Because the mind of enlightenment is the essence of pursuing Buddhahood, it will participate in the benefit of all sentient beings for as long as samsara exists. On the other hand, the mind of enlightenment that arises on the first bodhisattva ground will

The basis for not abandoning is that, relying on it, one can bring the ten great aspirations to the ultimate stage of completion. What are the ten? It is said that, may the realm of sentient beings reach its ultimate end, this is a vast manifestation. If this happens, one will not completely abandon samsara. Therefore, the so-called "without afflictions" refers to being in samsara. Its basis is the virtuous friend, because from them one can obtain the means to be without afflictions. The so-called "gathering sentient beings" is the definition of gathering sentient beings with the four objects of gathering. Its basis is patience and certainty. Indifference to those who have gone astray does not gather them. The so-called "cultivating diligence" is the definition of diligence being completely pure, like pure gold being completely ripe. If one dwells in a solitary place, diligence will become completely pure, therefore its basis is dwelling in a solitary place. Furthermore, the four causes enable one to cross the difficult-to-traverse path. If one asks what are the four? It is said, therefore, the very desire to go, and so on. That is, one who desires to go, one who is skilled in the path, one who does not mind thirst and hunger, and one who is cautious by not abandoning the path, these enable one to cross the difficult-to-traverse path. Thus, only these four causes enable one to cross the path of samsara, therefore, for the sake of the basis of these, one should understand the four dharmas. Among these, the basis of the very desire to go is bodhicitta, because it is the cause of the bodhisattva's going to practice. The basis of knowing the path is the virtuous friend of the bodhisattva, because relying on them one can obtain the knowledge of the path to enlightenment. The basis of not minding discouragement is patience and steadfastness. Among these, not minding discouragement is the irreversible suffering. Patience and steadfastness are non-hatred. The basis of caution is dwelling in a solitary place, because from it one can accomplish it. Why are the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, who strive for enlightenment, not called bodhisattvas? Because...

It is to establish the name as non-existent, called "as it appears." It is said that even if there are sentient beings who diligently strive for the enlightenment of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, they are not Bodhisattvas because they are not without something behind. Seeing that they are established as not appearing without something behind, this is how "as it appears" is shown. Although fireflies and the like are not non-appearing, they are not called appearing ones, and it is the same here. The term "meaning in brief" means that it is shown that it has been briefly explained in such a broad way. In brief, the Blessed One has fully shown in this Sutra the actions that are in accordance with those who have truly entered the Mahayana, and how their fruits will not be destroyed. Among them, the actions in accordance have been shown by the preceding Sutra verses. The fact that the fruit of the action will not be destroyed is shown by the last verse of the Sutra, that is, if one stays in a secluded place, one can concentrate one's mind, so the fruit of the action will not be destroyed. The Extensive Commentary on the Holy Four Dharmas, composed by the teacher Yeshe Jin, is complete. Translated, edited, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Dana Shila, Prajnavarma, and the editor-translator Bande Yeshe De. The Commentary on the Holy Four Dharmas, by Yeshe Jin.
