The Explanation of the Noble Four Dharmas, Yeshe Gyen. The Explanation of the Noble Four Dharmas, Yeshe Gyen. The Extensive Commentary on the Explanation of the Noble Four Dharmas. Homage to Manjushri, the Youthful One! The Sutra of the Four Dharmas, although spoken by the wise, yet for the sake of those who delight in small wisdom, I too shall truly explain. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the grove of Prince Jeta, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika, together with a great Sangha of monks, twelve hundred and fifty monks, and many Bodhisattvas. This is the introductory statement. Why did he dwell in the grove of Prince Jeta? It is to show that this Dharma is for those who manifest from the household life. Therefore, he taught the monks, saying that it was to show that those who have renounced can practice this Dharma. This great Sangha of monks shows the majority of the number, which is said to be twelve hundred and fifty monks. Then, the Blessed One taught the monks, saying: O monks. The term 'Blessed One' means that the monks listen like the Blessed One, and the Blessed One taught them in this way. Bodhisattvas, great beings, should not abandon these four dharmas, even for the sake of their lives, as long as they live. Why was this sutra composed? This is a synonym for 'what is needed'. The need is to correctly show those who have entered the Great Vehicle but are confused about the means to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, to lead the negligent to correct adherence, to praise the entry of all the timid, and to make those who have correctly entered very joyful. Thus, it shows four needs, namely, to correctly show, to correctly adhere, to correctly praise, and to cause great joy. For whom is it correctly shown?

Homage to the Guru! The statement "For those who are confused about the means to attain unsurpassed enlightenment" means that for those who are confused about the means to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, which is the enlightenment of the Buddha, it is for the sake of correctly instructing them. The statement "Even if they see the means to attain it, but do not practice it due to carelessness, it is for the sake of making those who are careless correctly receive it" is synonymous with "for the sake of making them enter into exhortation." The statement "Even if they enter correctly, but gradually decline due to excessive laziness, they are those who are completely discouraged," for the sake of correctly praising those who are completely discouraged, is synonymous with "greater diligence." The statement "Those who have initiated diligence and abide in these dharmas are those who have correctly entered," for the sake of making those who have correctly entered correctly rejoice, is synonymous with "for the sake of generating a distinction of joy." These necessities also apply appropriately to all sutras. Thinking about why the number "four" is mentioned, the statement "Saying the number 'four' is to avoid the fear of vastness, thereby completely abandoning those who do not want to hear" means that for those who are weak-minded and confused about vastness, if the number is not mentioned, the thought of fearing vastness will arise. That thought will cause them to not want to hear that dharma, therefore, to avoid that, the number is mentioned. The second reason is: mentioning the number makes it easy to remember. That is, those dharmas that have a number mentioned are easy to grasp, otherwise the mind will become distracted, therefore the names are mentioned. The third reason is: the patience and certainty that will appear below, because the necessity is the same, they are not different. That is, if the number "four" is not mentioned, then patience and certainty will not be understood. Why are those two not different? It is said "because the necessity is the same." Because the necessity is the same, it is considered that those two are not different. The number is mentioned in order to prevent it from not being attained. The statement "Even though the names of those who have correctly entered the Mahayana are many" refers to those who are correctly
