When remembering suffering and playful joy, and seeing the mind occasionally become agitated, one should pacify it by contemplating impermanence. Furthermore, when one enters into equanimity by being free from dullness and agitation, and sees the mind abiding in its own nature, one should abandon exertion and relaxation. If one forcefully exerts oneself to make the mind abide equally, then at that time, the mind will become distracted. Laziness and forgetting the object of focus, likewise dullness and agitation, non-effort and effort, all become faults in samadhi. Faith and so forth, the nature of mind, are the antidotes to these. In short, the faults of all samadhi are sixfold, namely: laziness, forgetting the object of focus, dullness, agitation, exertion, and non-exertion. As an antidote to these, one should cultivate the eight endeavors of abandonment, as the Bhagavan said, namely: faith, aspiration, diligence, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, equanimity, and attention. Among these, the first four are the antidote to laziness, that is, with faith, which has the characteristic of trusting in the qualities of samadhi, yogis will generate a mind of desiring it, and from desire, diligence will arise. From that, one will also obtain the very ability of body and mind. From pliancy, body and mind will turn away from laziness. Therefore, faith and so forth should be cultivated in order to abandon laziness. Mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object of focus. Awareness is the antidote to dullness and agitation, because it knows dullness and agitation closely. When dullness and agitation have not subsided, non-effort is a fault, therefore, one should cultivate attention as an antidote. When dullness and agitation have subsided, and when the mind abides in its own continuum, effort is a fault, therefore, one should cultivate equanimity as an antidote. Samadhi that is perfectly endowed with these eight endeavors of abandonment will become supremely suitable for accomplishing the perfection of qualities such as miracles. Therefore,

It is said in the Nadoda that one should meditate on the miraculous feet that possess the eight activities of abandonment. Considering this very sequence of meditation, the Blessed One said in the Mother Sutra: "Therein, the mind should be placed in equanimity. It should be placed correctly. It should be placed appropriately. It should be placed closely. It should be tamed. It should be pacified. It should be pacified closely. It should be made one. It should be made into samadhi." To place correctly is to cause the mind to continuously engage with the object. To place appropriately is to recognize distraction and to pacify it closely. To place closely is to pacify distraction closely and then to direct the mind more and more towards the object. To tame is to generate joy. To pacify is to pacify displeasure. To pacify closely is to eliminate the arising of sleep and drowsiness, and so forth. To make one is to strive to engage with the object without mental fabrication. To place in equanimity in samadhi is to maintain equanimity upon attaining mental equanimity, thereby grasping correctly. The explanation of these nine words is written from the works of Master Asanga. Furthermore, when does samadhi become complete with this sequence? At that time, it is said: When the mind, without effort, naturally enters, at that time, relying on the Buddha's equipoise, this is the manner of samadhi. When the mind, without mental fabrication, engages with the object and thereby abides, one should know that at that time, calm abiding is complete. Having thus understood equipoise, from then on, wisdom should be generated, and the difference between form and formlessness should be analyzed. Therefore, with this analysis, because it is without elaboration, one should know that all beings are the nature of the Dharmakaya, completely recollect only mind, and recollect in the manner of oneness and multiplicity, and so forth, in such a way that even suchness does not appear. Seeing suchness in this way, even if analyzed with wisdom, is the highest of true wisdom.

Because I do not see all dharmas. That is, in the Intermediate Mother of the Bhagavan, it is said, "What is the wisdom eye of the Buddhas, the Bhagavans?" It is seeing the meaning of not seeing anything. Similarly, what is ultimate seeing? It is not seeing all dharmas. Thus it is said. Therefore, when yogis abide in all activities, even if they see all dharmas, they take non-seeing. Like this, wanting to manifest non-seeing, it is not like sleeping or closing the eyes, not attending to anything. If that were the case, because the habitual tendencies have not been abandoned, just as one arises from the samadhi of non-perception, one would again be attached to forms and so on, and attachment and so on, rooted in habitual tendencies, would arise, and therefore one would not become a yogi. Merely not attending to the manifest attachment to forms and so on from beginningless time does not completely abandon it, and even the samadhi of non-perception and so on cannot abandon it. If one abandons the doubt of objects such as forms, one cannot completely abandon attention, just as completely abandoning fire cannot abandon heat. Therefore, the manifest attachment to forms and so on should be eliminated by being free from the seed of doubt, and it should not be done like pulling out a thorn. This must be so. To be free from the seed of doubt, one must make calm abiding and insight enter into mutual harmony. That is, if calm abiding arises with the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind, then the yogi who discerns with the eye of wisdom will be free from doubt. Being free from that, one is also free from manifest attachment to forms and so on. Being free from these, one also realizes that all dharmas are without inherent existence, and that is the Prajnaparamita. Moreover, at that time, calm abiding and insight are of its nature, and that is the supreme non-conceptual yoga. That is: Abandoning all conceptual thoughts, this is the supreme yoga. The yogi who abides manifestly in this is the omniscient Bhagavan.
