There are four: result, cause, and combination, etc., and the distinction of the stages of the path. Among these, three are the stages of the initial practitioner, and the fourth is the stage of the definitive aspect. The mind of generosity and other perfections is the stage of the cause. The eight that exist together with the stages of clairvoyance and others encompass the stage of the result. Among these, first, the Protector accurately explains the manner of supplication; second, entering into generosity and so on, the manner of entering is well proclaimed. The aspect of the mind of supplication is threefold, and that has been explained before. From where does the manner of entering begin? Taking vows as a preliminary, entering into the collection of generosity and so on is the mind of entering. The vows should also be taken from a lama who abides in vows and is learned and capable. If that is not possible, one should visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in front and take them. That is also: generosity and so on, devoid of wisdom, are not skillful means, nor are they grounds. Therefore, wisdom should be generated, and calm abiding should also be generated. Without wisdom, generosity and so on do not obtain the name of perfection, nor are they skillful means. Therefore, one should strive to generate wisdom and to generate calm abiding. Among these, whoever possesses discipline, is able to endure suffering, whoever has diligence and mindfulness, holds steadfastness, whoever is always endowed with correct view, his samadhi will quickly be perfected. The collection of calm abiding, abiding in the three, such as discipline, sitting comfortably on a seat in a direction that is agreeable to the mind, keeping the body straight, bringing great compassion to mind, with the thought of wanting to liberate all sentient beings, one should generate the samadhi that is characterized by one-pointedness of mind. Among these, the instruction is this: On all things, the distinctions of elements and so on, accurately focus on that until you attain calm abiding, thus direct the mind to each moment. First, the yogi should widely analyze and observe all things with the distinctions of the forms of elements and so on, and determine that all phenomena are limited to this extent, then, again, with the moments of the continuum of mind.

It should be focused on that. If the mind is distracted by attachment, etc., then cultivate the antidotes such as the contemplation of impurity. As long as it has not gained stability, the wise should pacify it. Also, when in the interval, if the mind becomes distracted by attachment, etc., then pacify the distraction by cultivating the contemplation of impurity, etc., and focus the mind on that again and again, becoming more and more focused. Then, the Bhagavan also showed in the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra that the nine types of attachment are very great, namely: attachment to shape, attachment to touch, attachment to the body odor arising from being smeared with sandalwood, etc., attachment to the beauty of the body arising from being adorned with ornaments, attachment to the color of the body, attachment to the fullness of flesh, attachment to the playfulness of the body and limbs, attachment arising from the beauty of teeth, and attachment to color and shape. The nine contemplations of impurity that are their antidotes are: for attachment to shape, the antidote is the contemplation of swelling; for attachment to the touch of the body, the antidote is the contemplation of being eaten by worms; for attachment to the odor of the body, the antidote is the contemplation of putrefaction; for attachment to the beauty of the body, the antidote is the contemplation of bluishness; for attachment to the color of the body, the antidote is the contemplation of pus; for attachment to the fullness of flesh, the antidote is the contemplation of being eaten; for attachment to the playfulness of the body and limbs, the antidote is the contemplation of scattering; for attachment to the beauty of teeth, the antidote is the contemplation of white bones; and for attachment to color and shape, the antidote is the contemplation of burning. For distraction arising from hatred, the antidote is the cultivation of loving-kindness. For distraction arising from delusion, the antidote is the cultivation of dependent origination. When the mind is seen to be displeased, the consideration of the qualities of samadhi and the consideration of the faults of unwholesomeness should also be pacified. Also, when the mind is seen to be depressed by sleep and darkness, the depression should also be pacified by cultivating the perception of light and by focusing on great joy, remembering the qualities of the Buddha, etc. Also, when
