A Brief Analysis of Differing Views. The Lion of Madhyamaka. A Brief Analysis of Differing Views. The Lion of Madhyamaka. In Sanskrit: Samkshipta Nānādrishta Vibhajya. In Tibetan: A Brief Analysis of Differing Views. Homage to the Bhagavan, who utterly vanquished the hosts of demons, and who made all the thickets of views appear clearly! It is said that the supreme lineage of Brahmins believes that there exists a self that is permanent, pervasive, without a body, and one. This is only to be refuted here, so the reasoning for refutation shall be explained. Such a self is certainly not the skandhas, because the self is permanent, and the skandhas are subject to arising and ceasing, therefore they are impermanent. If someone believes that the self is not permanent and is subject to arising and ceasing, then there will be no dispute. Also, just as a pot and a cloth are different, the self and the skandhas do not exist as different entities. Just as with a pot and a cloth, no one has ever closely observed the existence of the self apart from the skandhas, in any place or at any time. Since no one has ever closely observed it in any place or at any time, if you still believe it exists, then please acknowledge that a rabbit's horn and the son of a barren woman also exist! Therefore, the self does not exist apart from the skandhas. There is no state other than being different and not different. Otherwise, at the same time and in the same place, there would be the fault of being both one and different. Therefore, do not say that the self is liberated from being one and different. If you say so, then it must be said that a single pot is liberated from being a pot and not a pot. The self and the skandhas are also not dependent and the basis of dependence. Just as with water and a pot, no one has ever seen the self and the skandhas as such things. Since no one has seen it, if you still insist that it exists, then please produce more arguments to prove it! Even so, it is also impossible for the self to exist in one part of the skandhas. Just as with parasitic plants on a tree, and organs like eyes on the body, people cannot observe the self in the same way as existing in the skandhas. Moreover, there is no difference between the self and the skandhas, because the skandhas are many, and the self is one, which constitutes a contradiction. If it is believed that one self pervades multiple skandhas,

If so, let a single stream of smoke pervade all the fires in the ten directions. If so, you should be skilled in reasoning. I also do not exist in conjunction with the aggregates, because here we do not see a relationship like that of Devadatta and his son. If you can definitely establish the relationship between me and the aggregates, then you too will only be a noble one. If it (the self) is other than the aggregates, then there is no self, and the aggregates are impermanent, so abandon the idea that the self is permanent! If someone says that the self is pervasive, then that should also be analyzed in detail. As you say, things will all become one place, so what is east is also west and so on, all ten directions, and killing one being would be equivalent to killing all beings. Even so, I have never seen it, so abandon this doubt! The idea that there is a single self is also not correct, because the continuities of things are different, so the self will also become different. Moreover, if the self is one, then if one person is bound or liberated, all people will be bound or liberated, which would also be difficult to avoid. The self also does not exist without a body, because if you think that the self exists outside the body, that has already been refuted. If you think that the body is the self, then however the body exists, that is how the self exists, so please abandon the idea of being without a body! Furthermore, how is the self not autonomous? Who would autonomously inflict suffering on themselves? I am also not permanently existent, because it is clear that changes such as happiness and suffering are right before our eyes. I am also not a creator, who would inflict suffering on themselves? I am also not without a creator, because actions appear to be done, but if results occur without anything being done, can that be justified? I am also not permanent, because if that were the case, future lives and aging would not occur, have you seen that? I am also not impermanent, because if that were the case, actions would have no results, and there would be no samsara or liberation, and it would become effortless. Therefore, abandon these ideas that the self is permanent! There is still a little necessity for this.
