Explanation of the Three Kāyas by Yeshe Dawa Explanation of the Three Kāyas Yeshe Dawa In Sanskrit: Kāyatrayavṛtti. In Tibetan: Explanation of the Three Kāyas. First Chapter. Homage to youthful Manjushri. Having become disillusioned, thinking that samsara is the place of many sufferings, and focusing on the means of arising from it, at whatever time the first karma, the lineage is uncertain, possessing a mind led by conditions, attaining uncertain enlightenment, gradually engaging in practices such as listening to the sacred Dharma, at that time, just as those conditions are obtained, therefore, for all beings except sentient beings, deep and vast, with inconceivable power, excellent, the three kāyas of the nature of wisdom, in order to induce attainment, therefore the three kāyas are taught. Those who abide in lineage, desiring to attain the Dharmakāya, desire to generate the mind of enlightenment, but if its nature is not manifestly known, how can it be generated? From the Rūpakāya, the Tathāgata is not seen. Because it is forbidden to regard the Tathāgata by means of the complete marks. Furthermore, it was said: "Youth, Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas should not know the Tathāgata as the Rūpakāya." Why is that? "Because the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are the Dharmakāya, and they are distinguished by the Dharmakāya, but not distinguished by the Rūpakāya," thus it was extensively taught. How to fully know its nature, which is inconceivable and wonderful, excellent, and desiring the nature of Dharma, etc., is the lineage of diligently striving for it in great ease in order to attain it. Therefore, by its power, the other two kāyas will also be attained, because those two are distinguished by fully realizing it. Therefore: "Nirmāṇakāya and Sambhogakāya, likewise, the other is Dharmakāya." This verse was spoken. Nirmāṇakāya is indeed emanation. That which is suitable to be made into Sambhogakāya is the Sambhogakāya. The kāya of the nature of Dharmatā is the Dharmakāya, the word "nature" is made implicit. Nirmāṇakāya and Sambhogakāya and

If someone asks, whose are these three bodies of Dharmata? Therefore, it is said, "The body of the Able One," because there is no misconduct of body, speech, and mind, therefore it is called the Able One. But this is not because he does not say anything. These three bodies of the Bhagavan Tathagata, in order to liberate all sentient beings, remain until the end of samsara, and these are the nature of wisdom. Therefore, these bodies completely distinguish the Bhagavan, and omniscient wisdom is just these three bodies. Are the Tathagatas not completely distinguished by Bodhi? If someone asks, how are they completely distinguished? Therefore, it is said, "He gathers his Bodhi with it," meaning that the Bodhi of the Able One, which is the supreme wisdom, is gathered by these three bodies because it is the nature of wisdom. The excellent wisdom itself is sometimes called the supreme Dharmakaya, and by the power of the aspiration made by sentient beings, it is the nature of mirror-like wisdom and so on. In the pure Buddha-fields, because of experiencing various perfect enjoyments, it is the Sambhogakaya, which arises entirely from its power. By its power, the wisdom nature for accomplishing the benefit of others is called Nirmanakaya, taming various different sentient beings, knowing the differences in form, color, and behavior, appearing before those whose roots of virtue have matured. These three are the bodies of the Able One. If someone asks, what is that? Therefore, in order to explain the meaning expressed by its own nature, it is said, "Depending on the ground of application, etc., also on others as appropriate." It means that on the ground of application, which is the ground of application, the ground of the conduct of Bodhisattvas, this is a synonym. Why? Because it is the support. On others, from whom else? From others than the Bodhisattvas. As appropriate, it means according to their lineage, according to their maturity, and according to their roots of virtue, that is its meaning.
