A Difficult Explanation of Differentiating the Two Truths. Śāntarakṣita. A Difficult Explanation of Differentiating the Two Truths. Śāntarakṣita. In Sanskrit: Satyadvyavibhaṅgapañjikā. In Tibetan: A Difficult Explanation of Differentiating the Two Truths. Volume One. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī. In order to increase the wisdom of those with little intelligence, by differentiating the two truths, this difficult explanation will be briefly summarized. Here, when beginning the treatise, to those who have truly realized that all phenomena are without inherent existence, with compassion, until the end of samsara, the Sugata and all the Buddha-sons, in order to accomplish the benefit of all beings in the world, those who dwell here with stainless wisdom, I pay homage to them. Thus, praising the beloved deity is for the sake of auspiciousness. Or, it is to show that it accords with the conduct of the virtuous. Or, when composing a treatise, offering to the teacher is to generate respect for that treatise. Or, because its meaning is excellent, it is to accomplish the teacher. Because there are two types of teachers: those who have attained and those who have not. This homage is made only in accordance with the meaning of the treatise. Because I will strive to accomplish such meanings here. Three meanings are shown in this verse: the complete understanding of the reality of phenomena, which is shown by "Whoever has truly realized that all phenomena are without inherent existence." The transcendence of the nature of phenomena and non-phenomena is non-inherent existence. Because both phenomena and non-phenomena are without inherent existence. The sound of "phenomena" refers to inherent existence. Dwelling is shown by five greatnesses: the great cause is because it arises from the cause of compassion. Compassion has three aspects because it focuses on sentient beings and so on. Great time is because it dwells until the end of samsara. Great activity is because it is the agent of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Body, speech, and mind are endowed with ability. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas are the able ones. The Bhagavan is the bo

Because of the ability of earth, speech, and mind, possessing uncommon characteristics, therefore they are their masters. As it is said in the Sutra of the Secret of the Tathagata, it mentions the secret of the body, etc. The mention of "together with the sons" is to show that the retinue of the Bhagavan is always numerous and pure. This great necessity is also shown by "world," etc.: benefiting the entire world, which means this is also the whole, and it is also the accomplishment of the things that benefit the world. The great one who is not tainted by faults is shown by "the one with immaculate wisdom." Wisdom is immaculate because it has abandoned the obscurations of afflictions and the obscurations of knowledge. Because those two obscurations are completely abandoned, abandoned together with their predispositions, and because it has abandoned all the obscurations of samadhi and meditative absorption. Or, for those who dwell in samsara, because they are not tainted by the faults of samsara, such as worldly dharmas, therefore they are immaculate in wisdom. The word "also" is to show the adornment of incongruity; relying on the ultimate truth, one comprehends the reality of things as they are, and relying on the conventional truth, it also shows abiding. Because the enjoyment body is necessarily produced from the accumulation of merit and wisdom, but in order to make the great Bodhisattvas appear as blue, etc., as they wish, therefore it is established as it is, and therefore there is no contradiction. Prostration, in general, is because it is the meaning of the nature of the three actions. This exposition is not begun because it is unnecessary, but to show that one should not doubt it is like a crow examining teeth, because its reason is not established. "In order to comprehend the two truths as they are" is said. The word "as they are" is to show that others have also shown the distinction of the two truths, but that is not correct. The relationship is not stated separately because it is included in the necessity, just like all treatises, or for the activity, necessity itself.
