The Reasoning That Reverses Error, Establishing Proof, by Aryadeva. The Reasoning That Reverses Error, Establishing Proof. By Aryadeva. In Sanskrit: Sakalitapramardana Yuktahetusiddhi Nama. In Tibetan: The Reasoning That Reverses Error, Establishing Proof. Homage to youthful Manjushri! I pay homage with body, speech, and mind To the Teacher, the lamp of the world, The Dharma, nectar that cures the disease of affliction, And those who are learning and not learning. In this world of the five degenerations, Explaining the path for the benefit of beings, For those who are demons and aligned with demons, Who view the path as wrong, Whose own views impair the true path, Who consider the wrong path to be the path, Who argue wrongly about what is correct, I will explain in order to dispel these. Summary: Mistaking what exists for what does not exist, and definitely mistaking what is impermanent for what is permanent. Mistaking what does not exist for what exists, and definitely mistaking what is permanent for what is permanent. Error deceives and is deceived by error, thus accomplishing the error of error. Due to the power of error, one is mistaken about the true meaning and mistaken about the cause. Due to the condition of that error, one is always mistaken about the result, the three lower realms. By knowing error and non-error, one is not mistaken in order to eliminate error. In order to show those errors, I will explain what is without error. In order to know the faults of error and the qualities of non-error, examine this error. Some say that mistaking what exists for what does not exist is: Live happily until you die. After death, there is no use for it. The body is gone like ashes. There is no turning back to life. Therefore, there is no before or after. For the sake of happiness in this life, If you worship gods and suppress demons, You will achieve power, wealth, strength, and might. Some of these Dharma practitioners say: The number of days, days, days, The seed, sprout, cause, and effect, Sprout due to the power of habit. One contradiction gives rise to countless births. For the sake of glory, splendor, and enjoyment, Gods, nagas, yakshas, rakshasas, and obstacles, If worshiping and suppressing them is beneficial, The gods themselves should achieve what they desire. Others say: All phenomena, internal and external sources, Are established by their own nature, not by others. The roundness of beans, the thorns of jujube trees, the sharpness of thorns, the length of thorns, The peacock's tail feathers, the brightness of the throat, The rising of the sun, the downward flow of water, Are all established by their own nature.

Saying: There is no cause. To this, the holder of this doctrine says: If the sky has no support, and beans and peas etc. exist, if the self-nature without cause is seen, they arise relying on earth etc. Water also flows downwards from above, and the sun rises equally in the four directions, if the self-nature without cause is true, water flows by the power of the earth. Like Mount Meru, the sun revolves. Others say: The one who is born has no consciousness, and has no autonomy over his own suffering and happiness. The lord either throws him into a cliff, or causes him to be born in the heavens. To this, the holder of this doctrine says: The goodness or badness of the land, the heavens and the evil realms, the seeds of good and evil, like barley and wheat, if sown by a person who is like the lord, although the birth is the same, wheat and barley ripen separately. Thus, the lord is not independent, good and evil are independent. Others say: For example, like a pottery calf, going to the heavens and evil realms, the king of wisdom has autonomy, and does not need to rely on other causes and conditions. To this, the holder of this doctrine says: Like a bird, there is autonomy, but only if there is no obstruction of the place. If the heavens and evil realms are like a bird, then there is obstruction of the place. Similarly, good and evil are also influenced by the place, and the king of wisdom has no autonomy. Therefore, where to go in the heavens and evil realms is determined by the two, good and evil. To this, some people निश्चित (Tibetan, निश्चित,Devanagari, niścita, Romanized Sanskrit, niścita, literal Chinese meaning: certain) mistakenly believe in impermanence. Some say: The ornaments, food and drink, retinue and mounts, dwellings and words, and whatever is thought and done in this life, will be the same in the next life, and all these are eternal. To this, the holder of this doctrine says: If what is done in this life is also eternal in the next life, for example, if summer is hot, winter is cold, autumn ripens, and spring grows, if it is always like this, why are these not eternal, but change due to the power of the sun in the four continents? Similarly, these sentient beings are also changed by the impermanent karma in the next life. Others say: Parents, siblings, wives and relatives, how they are in this life, so they will be in the next life, and these close and friendly people will surely accompany each other forever. Those who are skilled in Brahminical speech say so. To this, the holder of this doctrine says: For example, on a rice stalk, although many fruits ripen together, some are seeds, some are chaff, and the seeds are scattered in all directions. None ripen together. Similarly, these close and friendly people are also like that.
