The Treatise Called Four Hundred Verses Āryadeva The Treatise Called Four Hundred Verses Āryadeva In Sanskrit: Catuḥśatakaśāstra-kārikā-nāma. In Tibetan: The Treatise Called Four Hundred Verses. Homage to the Noble Mañjuśrī. For whom the three realms are sovereign, who himself has no lord of death, If he sleeps soundly as he must, what else is more wretched than that? Having been born for the sake of dying, with a nature of going under the power of others, death seems like something to be done, while living seems like something not to be done. You see the past as short, and the future as different, That thought of yours, whether equal or unequal, is like a clear cry of fear. Since it is common to others as well, if you have no fear of death, How could it not be that whatever harms one, jealousy, will give rise to suffering through the door? By curing disease and healing old age, you are not afraid of those things, But because the future punishment is unavoidable, you are most clearly afraid of that. Like animals to be slaughtered, death is common to all, And also, when death appears, why are you not afraid of the lord of death? Because there is no certainty of time, if you think, "I am permanent," At what time will the lord of death harm you? Looking to the meaning of the future, if living is not exhausted, Who would say that one who sells himself has discrimination? Having made oneself a pledge, what is the use of sin? Surely you, like the wise, are content with being free from desire for me. For whom living is called nothing other than a moment of mind, Because beings do not understand that certainty, it is rare to know oneself. You like to live long, and you do not like old age, Alas, the behavior of you people seems like a friend but is an enemy. If you yourself grieve at death, is it not for the sake of your children and so on? Why is the one who speaks of self-reproach not despised by others? When someone is born without being entrusted, and becomes a child, Is it not unreasonable for him to leave without being asked? Because of the cause of ignorance, there is no discrimination towards the child, This joy in going away is caused by old age.

Will become an indicator. Just as a father loves his son, Similarly, for it, it will not arise. This world goes to ruin, Therefore, obtaining heaven is also difficult. When following disagreement, No painful designation exists. At that time, attachment and trade, Are merely similar arising. The suffering caused by separation, People quickly turn away from the heart, For attachment, there is also the suffering of separation, Look at the impermanence that it shows. Even if the torment of harm has been done, Knowing that there is no merit, You will still outwardly adorn yourself, That is also not suitable for me. Like scattering suffering, This world wanders everywhere. For a person who has become suffering, What is the use of scattering suffering? Whose meeting is joyful, How can his separation not be joyful? Meeting and separation, Are they not appearing together? The past has no beginning, The future has no end, Why do you only see the meeting, Even if it is long, there is no separation? Moments and so on, those times, Will surely become like enemies, Therefore, for those who have become enemies, In every way, you should not be attached. If you cannot escape the fear of evil thoughts, You will certainly not leave home, Then, which wise person will certainly Do it because it must be done? If you do this and clearly, Thinking of going to the forest, Whatever you do must be abandoned, What merit is there in doing that? Thinking that I am going to die, For whom it is certain to exist, That is because attachment has been completely abandoned, What fear is there of the Lord of Death? The four hundred verses on the yoga practice of a Bodhisattva, showing the means of abandoning the clinging to permanence, is the first chapter. Although the body is seen as an enemy, Even so, it should be protected. Living long with discipline, From that, great merit is done. People's suffering arises from the body, And happiness arises from others, For that which has become the container of all suffering, Why do you respect this body? When happiness is not like suffering, Mostly does not happen to people, Then, for such great suffering, Will you think it is small? The world clearly tends towards happiness, Even happiness is difficult to obtain, Therefore, this decaying being
