Treatise on the Transition of Existence. By Maitreya Gonpo. Treatise on the Transition of Existence. By Maitreya Gonpo. In Sanskrit: Bhava Samkranti Tika. In Tibetan: Srid pa 'pho ba'i Tika (Treatise on the Transition of Existence). Homage to the All-Knowing One. "Because there is no entity, there is no birth." As it is said, if a seed arises from a seed, then it would be reasonable for a pot to arise from a pot. Since the action of itself has ceased, it is impossible for a seed to arise. The nature of being transformed by the five elements is the nature of dependent origination. If that is the case, who will bear the burden of virtue and sin? It will become like nihilism. That birth is not so. Like poison planted by a mouse, it hurts as soon as thunder sounds. It is the nature of arising from dependent origination. From then on, arising from an entity is not the nature. For that which is without entity: "Taking birth is existence." If it arises from that which is without entity, then the child of a barren woman, a flower in the sky, and a rabbit's horn should also exist. If it is not like that, then because it arises, it is impossible for it not to arise. If a seed is planted in fire, it cannot grow. For that which is without entity: "Taking birth is existence" is shown as, just as in a lake filled with water and mud, water lilies and lotuses grow. Just as fire arises from friction wood and iron. What fault is there in arising? I always think that it arises from an entity. If it is not like that, it is a mistake. Whatever is perceived by the senses, if those themselves change, then that very knower will become a child. That very wisdom has nothing to do. The Lankavatara Sutra says: Thinking that all things exist is like the thought of a child. If one sees it like that, then everything will become the knower. What is shown otherwise: Just as the eye does not see form, worldly people are deluded. Whatever arises from the path of the senses, its example is like this. Like illusion, mirage, dream, echo, rainbow, the city of illusions of the moon's reflection in water, like discrimination. The feet of the hero also said: Existence and non-existence, birth and death, that which has no cessation, the entity is emptiness. All those who see signs and entities are mistaken by seeing entities. How is it? It is like thinking of a flower in the sky, in the nature of being equal to the sky, it is said.

Ma. Since things are emptiness, equal to the sky, and since they are not stained by the faults of arising and ceasing, only the nature of reality, such as form and feeling, are equal to the sky. Moreover, when arising, it arises because of the gathering of dependent origination. That is also for the conventional worldly people. For the ultimate truth, there is no inconsistency. Inconceivable illusion is the nature of Dharma. In the Sutra of Sālu Ljampa, it says: Whatever is born by dependent origination, seen by the five causes, it is not determined by itself, nor is it an annihilator, nor is it a transferrer, nor is it a cause arising naturally, nor is it a result arising from ripening. Those are not related in harmony. What is it that is determined by itself? Just as the seed and the sprout are inconsistent. It is not, because if that were the case, whichever is the seed, that itself is the sprout. If that were the case, the seed would cease. When the sprout arises, what is not cessation? The sprout does not arise because the previous seed has ceased. Only when the seed ceases does the sprout arise, just like measuring the height and depth with a scale. What is not a transferrer? It is not like a seed, it is a sprout. What is not a cause arising naturally? Because the first fruit did not arise naturally. What is not a result arising from ripening? It is the nature of the fruit that is established, the fruit does not produce the fruit. What is the inconsistent connection? Like that, arising from dependent origination, it is the fruit produced by those. The way the aggregates arise is also: ignorance produces formations, consciousness produces name and form, the six sense bases and the five aggregates are formed. The arising of all emptinesses, that is the nature of forms, it arises from dependent origination. Thus, it is established and widely known. Thus, emptiness itself, after arising, form can be seen, all things are emptiness. Thus, emptiness is fully born. Thus, all external and internal dharmas are empty. By what cause does the nature of things arise? All dharmas are equal to the sky. Thus, the absence of things is existence. There is no result without a cause, from "this world and the other world" in between, believing that the cause is made by Ishvara, and karma.
