Commentary on the Seventy Verses on Emptiness By the noble Nāgārjuna. Commentary on the Seventy Verses on Emptiness By the noble Nāgārjuna. In Indian language: Śūnyatāsya saptati vṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Seventy Verses on Emptiness. Homage to the noble Mañjuśrī, the courageous one of wisdom! Do they abide, arise, disintegrate, exist, or not? Are they inferior, equal, or superior? The Buddha speaks through the power of worldly conventions, Not through the power of the true word. Whether abiding, arising, or disintegrating, Existing, not existing, inferior, Equal, or superior, all of these The Buddha speaks according to worldly conventions, not solely according to the power of his true word. Here it is said: Whatever expressions such as "I" are, they are somehow nonexistent, or the thought that there is no self also arises, so the self certainly exists. Here it is said: No-self, not no-self, self, and not no-self, nothing is expressed. Why? All phenomena to be expressed Are like nirvāṇa, empty in nature. Here it is said: All things are empty in nature. Is this a king's command? Or, by what means can one understand that all things are empty in nature? Here it is said: Because the nature of all things, whether the collection of causes and conditions, or individually, or in all, is not present, therefore it is empty. Because the nature of all things, whether causes and conditions, or the collection of causes and conditions, or for all things, it does not exist in all, therefore it is said that all things are empty in nature. Furthermore, because existence exists, it does not arise; because non-existence does not exist, it does not arise; because the qualities are incompatible, it is neither existence nor non-existence; because there is no arising, there is no abiding or ceasing. Because a thing exists, it does not arise from a cause, because it has been said that "existence is existence." Because non-existence does not exist, it does not arise from a cause. Because existence and non-existence are different, they do not arise, because they are mutually contradictory. Thus, existence and non-existence are of mutually contradictory nature, therefore, because the qualities are incompatible, it is neither existence nor non-existence, which is the point.

Since there is no birth, there is also no abiding and cessation. Here it is said that the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena are birth, abiding, and cessation. At the time of birth, birth is also shown, so in some sense, conditioned phenomena have birth. Here it is said: What is born is not to be born, what is unborn is also not to be born, and the time of birth is also not to be born, because of birth and non-birth. For the time being, what is born is not to be born. Why? Because it has already been born, and what has already been born is not to be born. What is unborn is also not to be born, why? Because it is unborn. Whatever is unborn is not to be born, because it is separate from action, has no power, and does not exist, so it is not to be born. The time of birth is also not to be born, why? Because that is the end between birth and non-birth. Whatever is born and unborn is also not to be born only according to the order mentioned earlier. Therefore, for the time being, what is born is not to be born because it has already been born. Whatever is unborn is not to be born because it is unborn, and because it is separate from the action of birth, has no power, and does not exist. Therefore, because there is nothing else at the time of the third birth other than what has been born and what has not been born, it is also not to be born. Furthermore, because the cause is unreasonable, there is also no birth. Why? If the result exists, the cause that has the result, if that does not exist, it is the same as a non-cause. It is contradictory that existence is not, and non-existence is not. It is not reasonable in the three times. If the result exists, then what has the result is the cause. If that result does not exist, it becomes the same as a non-cause. It is contradictory that the result exists and does not exist. It is impossible for non-existence and existence to be at the same time. Furthermore, it is also unreasonable to be a cause in the three times. How is it? For the time being, if the cause is considered to be earlier, then what is the cause of? But if it is considered later, then what cause is needed for what has already been established? Or consider that the cause and the result are simultaneous.
