The Treatise Called "Fine Powdering" Noble Nāgārjuna The Treatise Called "Fine Powdering" Noble Nāgārjuna In Sanskrit: Vaidalyam Nama Prakarana In Tibetan: The Treatise Called "Fine Powdering." Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Due to the pride of speculative knowledge, whoever manifestly desires to debate, in order to dispel his pride, I will explain "Fine Powdering." All other opponents who debate here undoubtedly commit to and establish as certain the topics of valid cognition, object of valid cognition, doubt, need, example, established tenet, members, speculation, ascertainment, debate, expression, refutation by exhaustive criticism, fallacious reasons, abandoning words, collapse, and points of defeat. However, those who speak of emptiness do not commit to meanings such as valid cognition because they have no attachment, so they say. To this, it should be said: valid cognition and object of valid cognition are both mixed. Here, valid cognition and object of valid cognition are seen as mixed, because if there is an object of valid cognition, it becomes valid cognition, and if there is valid cognition, then the object of valid cognition is the object of valid cognition. Thus, valid cognition is established from the object of valid cognition, and the object of valid cognition is also established from valid cognition. Valid cognition becomes the object of valid cognition of the object of valid cognition, and the object of valid cognition becomes the valid cognition of valid cognition. Because they obtain their nature by relying on each other, therefore valid cognition also becomes both, and the object of valid cognition also becomes both, so the two are mixed. Therefore, it is not established from itself. If valid cognition and object of valid cognition were established by their own essence, then they would become valid cognition and object of valid cognition. Because it is established by dependence, which means producing each other, therefore it is not established from itself. Furthermore, things that are existent, nonexistent, and both are not dependent. If it were also established as dependent, then which of the two, existent or nonexistent, would it be? Regarding this, for the moment, because it is existent, existence is not dependent, because an existent pot does not depend on other clay and so on. Because it is nonexistent, nonexistence is also not dependent, like a rabbit's horn and so on.

Moreover, it becomes a fault of mutual dependence. Since there are two faults, neither is mutually dependent. It is said: Just as without scales, etc., there is no measurable object to be grasped, similarly, without valid cognition, there is no measurable object to be grasped. It should be said: No, because it would become an endless fault. If it is asserted that measurable objects are not established without valid cognition, then by what means do you assert that valid cognitions are established without valid cognition? A special reason or difference must be stated. If it is further asserted that all objects are established by valid cognition, then it would follow that valid cognitions are established by a valid cognition other than themselves, because valid cognitions are included among all objects. If valid cognitions are not established by valid cognitions, then the assertion that all objects are to be established by valid cognition is broken. It is said: Valid cognitions do not have valid cognition, here, like a lamp, valid cognition establishes itself and others. Just as it is seen that a lamp clearly illuminates itself and others, so too valid cognitions establish themselves and others. Therefore, the endless fault of lamps, etc., does not exist. It should be said: A lamp does not illuminate whether it encounters darkness or not. Does a lamp illuminate after encountering darkness? Or does it illuminate even without encountering it? For the time being, a lamp will not illuminate after encountering darkness, because there is no encounter. Because there is no encounter between a lamp and darkness, because they are contradictory. Where there is a lamp, there is no darkness, so how can this lamp dispel darkness or illuminate? If it does not encounter, then it is like a sword that does not encounter cannot cut. If it is said that this will also be like the harm of a planet, then no, because it contradicts the analogy. Just as the harm caused by a planet, it causes harm after encountering, or grasps its own body, etc., in this way the harm caused by a lamp does not exist in refutation, how can it be the same as the harm caused by a planet? Planets, etc., having a body, will affect beings, etc., while fire and rope
