Commentary on the Heart Sutra, Marme Dze Yeshe. Commentary on the Heart Sutra, Marme Dze Yeshe. Herein lies the commentary on the Heart Sutra. Homage to the Perfection of Wisdom. If we summarize all the meanings of the second turning of the Dharma wheel spoken by the Sugata, there are two: the meaning of Abhisamaya and the meaning of essence. Among them, the three sutras, extensive, intermediate, and concise, are spoken according to the three types of individuals, mainly teaching Abhisamaya; the Seven Hundred Verses and others mainly teach the meaning of essence. The path of Abhisamaya mainly teaches the object of wisdom. Among them, the three, extensive, intermediate, and concise, mainly teach Abhisamaya, and also implicitly teach the meaning of essence. The Seven Hundred Verses and others mainly teach the meaning of essence, and incidentally teach Abhisamaya. Here, too, the meaning of essence is taught, and according to Vimalamitra, the meaning of this sutra is completely taught by eight meanings. The so-called eight meanings are the establishment of the nature of the sutra by "Thus, I have heard at one time," and so on. In addition, Master Vasubandhu and others have also explained the meaning of the sutra in other ways: the cause of the sutra's arising and the actual sutra. The first is divided into two: the instigator and the basis. The difference between these two is: the cause of the arising of words and the cause of the arising of the sutra. That is, what happened before and what was added later, which is the instigator. The basis is divided into two: the common and the special basis. The difference between these two is: what is common to all sutras, and what is special to this sutra and not found in other sutras. There are four common ones: time and teacher, place and retinue. There are two special bases: the main deity and the retinue entering into samadhi. That is the summary meaning. The necessary meaning is to make the compiler himself a reliable person, because if it is said that at a certain time, the teacher heard in a certain place with these retinues, then if words with basis and signs are spoken, then the compiler will believe that this statement is true, just as in the world, one understands that what someone says is true through detailed basis and signs. Master Vasubandhu also said this:

The elephant (Glang-pos) said: In order to lead the faithful into the path, and to fully prove oneself to be reliable, the teacher and retinue, the sovereign, the place and time, etc., are proclaimed. Because the collector proclaims the place and time, etc., in the world, if the statement is made with witnesses, then one becomes reliable. Thus it is said. The meaning of these words and the combination of words are clear. Therefore, it is said in the summary of the Eight Thousand Verses that all sutras should be explained in this way. The rest is the same. Here, the immaculate spiritual friend refutes it, and in order to clarify his own view, he first refutes it, which has two faults: inability and inability to be a witness. Among them, inability means inability to accomplish that necessary thing. Now, it is said in order to lead those who follow with faith into the path, and to prove oneself to be a reliable person. The necessity of a witness is also needed when doubts, etc., arise about it later. If that is the case, then those who have attained supernatural powers and comprehension will not be able to ascertain the meaning of the scriptures, because some witnesses have already passed into nirvana, and some live elsewhere. That is also, the profound and boundless sutra collection, with a desire to hear the jewel, goes to accomplish benefits in all worlds. In this way. Some people, even if they live here, do not have the merit to see. Like Mahakashyapa and so on. The second fault is that even if one is able to accomplish that necessary thing, one cannot become a witness oneself. If one thinks that by pointing out these and those as witnesses, thereby pointing out the names of the retinue, one becomes a witness, then if one relies on directly pointing out the names like "Subhuti" and so on to become a witness, then just like this sutra, without the names of the retinue, how can one become a witness? Therefore, it should be explained in this way: Before explaining the sutra containing the previously occurred story, one should first introduce that beginning, which is the statement "Thus have I heard." This shows that one has heard truthfully without omission, therefore, by knowing that the retinue has proclaimed without inversion, one will have the behavior of listening carefully to the collector, etc.
