Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Chapter on Equality of Learning Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Chapter on Equality of Learning From "Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, thought to himself" to "While practicing the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, if one can overwhelm all sentient beings, what need is there to mention attaining complete and perfect enlightenment?" This shows the great benefit of practicing the pure dharmas such as generosity and the other perfections. From "Whatever sentient beings enter into the knowledge of all aspects, they will also obtain it well" to "Those who listen to this Prajnaparamita should be pleasing to all." This shows the great benefit of merely thinking of the knowledge of all aspects, generating the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment, and practicing the Prajnaparamita. From "Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, took many Mandarava flowers" to "Bhagavan, I, as a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, will not turn back, and will not have any thought of becoming a Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha." This shows that Indra, having realized the great benefit of practicing the Prajnaparamita in this way, developed great faith and made offerings to the Bhagavan. He also completely dedicated the roots of virtue from such offerings, and truly entered into unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment, without any fear of turning back. From "Generating faith in unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment" to "After I have completely passed into Nirvana, will I be able to lead sentient beings who have not yet passed into Nirvana to completely pass into Nirvana? Please enlighten me." This shows that the Bodhisattva who has generated the mind of unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment in this way has the intention to accomplish the complete benefit of oneself and others. From "Bhagavan, I rejoice in the generation of the mind of enlightenment by those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have newly entered the Great Vehicle" to "the tip of a hair

Even if the measure of a drop of water could be measured by a single Magadha measure out of a hundred, the merit of rejoicing in these minds of enlightenment is immeasurable. This passage shows that rejoicing in such a perfect thought of self and other benefit is of great merit. After speaking thus, the Lord Indra, king of the gods, asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in those who generate the mind of enlightenment are blessed by the devil. From "are blessed by the devil" to "those beings are reborn after dying from the realm of the devil," this passage shows the condemnation of not rejoicing in such a perfect mind of enlightenment for the benefit of self and others. Why is that? Blessed One, whatever is without shrinking and without fear is the Prajnaparamita. This passage shows that all dharmas are completely pure by nature, so it is true that there is no such thing as obtaining a pure vessel. To be without shrinking and without fear in such a profound meaning is to obtain purity. All ordinary people neither know nor understand this dharma nature. From "neither know nor understand this dharma nature" to "act in all-knowingness," this passage shows that bodhisattvas also act in the six perfections and so on in order to lead beings into the true meaning, so they act skillfully in the mundane. Subhuti, such a bodhisattva mahasattva who acts in this way does not generate a mind that corresponds to all-knowingness. This passage shows the benefit of learning such skillful means, and the few who learn in this way, and illustrates it with a metaphor. The clinging to words will be in vain. Why is that? Subhuti, when such a bodhisattva mahasattva practices this profound Prajnaparamita, he has no attachment to any dharma, because he has no attachment, he does not generate a mind for any dharma.
