Thirty-third, the chapter on being skilled in purifying the fields. Thirty-third, the chapter on being skilled in purifying the fields. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the venerable Subhuti, and so on, which means that previously all dharmas abide in the emptiness of their own nature. From the time of teaching the skillful means of maturing sentient beings with the three samadhis of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, in order to distinguish the occasion for teaching the profound dharma, Shariputra asked Subhuti about his doubts. Venerable Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva enters the three samadhis of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness in a dream, will the Prajnaparamita increase? This is to ask Subhuti in order to distinguish the occasion for teaching that all dharmas are like dreams. Subhuti said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if it increases by meditating during the day, then it should also increase without dreaming. This is because, in terms of ultimate truth, all dharmas are empty of inherent nature. If even when not asleep, practicing the three samadhis cannot cause the Bodhisattva to increase with the accumulation of merit and wisdom, then how could it increase by practicing in a dream? The teaching of maturing sentient beings through the power of practicing the three samadhis, etc., is only teaching as a dream in conventional truth. In terms of ultimate truth, it does not exist. That is the meaning. Why is that? Venerable Sharadvatiputra, there is no distinction between dreams and daytime. This is to show the reason why all dharmas are like dreams. In terms of ultimate truth, both conduct when not asleep and conduct in dreams are equally without substance, therefore they are not objects of discrimination. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita during the day, then he meditates on the Prajnaparamita, then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should also meditate on the Prajnaparamita in a dream.

The term "Thus" is to clearly indicate the meaning of "all dharmas are like dreams" mentioned above. Just as cultivating the Prajnaparamita in a dream will increase the accumulation of merit and wisdom, so too, when not asleep, cultivating the Prajnaparamita will not actually increase the accumulation of merit and wisdom. This is its meaning. The noble Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, did something in a dream, will that action increase or decrease? This is to say, if being awake and dreaming are the same, then they should also be the same in the conventional truth. If one does good or bad deeds in a dream, will doing good deeds increase the accumulation of merit, etc., and doing bad deeds decrease merit? Shariputra asked Subhuti this question. If the Blessed One said that all dharmas are like dreams, then will it increase or decrease? This is Subhuti relying on the aspect of the ultimate truth, and the Blessed One also said that all dharmas are like dreams, without substance. Therefore, doing good or bad deeds in a dream will not increase or decrease good. This is what is to be expressed. Why? Because the dharmas of dreams do not increase or decrease. This is to explain the reason why doing good or bad deeds in a dream will not increase good or decrease good. The dharmas of dreams have no substance, and without substance there will be no increase or decrease. If one discriminates after waking up, will it increase or decrease? This is the son of Shati relying on the truth of the conventional truth, having done good or bad deeds in a dream, remembering them upon waking up, and rejoicing and discriminating, will it increase good or decrease it? He raised this question. Subhuti said, killing during the day and killing in a dream, thinking upon waking up: I killed, I killed well. Noble Sharadvatiputra, what do you say about this? This is in the conventional truth, dreams
